On Kids Playing with Toy Guns
Editor-in-Chief Doug Howlett’s column
(Feb. 13 Gun Digest) about letting kids
play with toy guns touched on the issues
of being both a responsible parent and a
responsible gun owner in a time when toy
_guns are demonized. We recieved a huge
‘number of letters from our readers and
some are published here. As for myself,
‘my prized posessions as a boy were my
toy guns and later, a Daisy BB gun. AS a
parent, I'm doing as my father did with
ime: let the kid have fan playing cop or
soldier but with real firearms (air guns
included) the rules of gun safety ap-
ply and they are to be handled with the
utmost respect and seriousness. ~James
Card, Managing Editor
[As soon as we stop allowing kids to
play with guns we have begun to lose
the battle and magazines such as Gun
Digest will be toast. People are not
parenting today. I raised two boys
with toy guns and real guns about the
house and there never was a problem.
Tkept a pistol bedside and they never
touched it; they knew better. That
‘was off limits, As soon as they were
old enough to comprehend, | took
‘them to a range and showed them the
power of a hollow point .22 LR and
a shotgun on water-filled jugs. When
they grew up they told me that was
the most impressive thing that I could
have done. I explained to them that
‘our bodies have a great deal of water
and a bullet would react the same
way. Their eyes were as big as saucers.
‘That was S0 plus years ago.
—George A. Fogg

Thad never even considered the
points you raised. If someone had
asked me that, cold, T would have
said, “Of course; why not?" [don’t
have a definitive answer, but as a
responsible gun owner, it does give
me reason to pause. Your question
reminds me of how disturbed | am
when I see firearms instructors, match
directors, safety officers and any num-
ber of people in videos handling dum-
my guns and dry-fire pistols as if they
were toys. Muzzles are flying every
which-way, fingers are going in and
out of trigger guards indiscriminately,
and so on. I, myself, have several such
tools for training purposes and I'm
very deliberate about observing the
rules of firearms safety, no differently
than I do with actual firearms.

(One afternoon my wife had a child
come over to play with our grandson.
This child, like most kids, was very
curious and had to see what was in
the basement. He went down and
found one of my toy guns sitting on
top of a display cabinet. It was a .38
Special toy cap gun. He picked it up
and pointed it at my grandson who
knew that you don’t point any gun at
anybody and he told his grandmother
what his friend did. She immeditealy
defused the situation. The child told
his mother later that the grandfather
hhas a lot of guns and we played with
them. Luckly my wife explained what
had happened but the mother was
very upset that her baby was playing
ina house that had guns in it
‘Unfortunatly most kids in this,
day and age are not exposed to any
Kind of guns, let alone toy guns. We
should be careful and teach kids safe
handling of any gun be it a toy or real
gun,
Bad habits are hard to break if not
caught at an early age. When I watch
the Andy Griffith Show it takes me
back to a simple time when certain
American values were not questioned,
But to answer your question should
Kids play with toy guns? It is a hard
question to just say yes or no.
—Arthur Cecchini
Garrison, N.Y.
Kids don’t need a gun of any kind to
play gun’s. A stick or a finger can be
a single-action six gun or a modern,

of rounds in the last 68 years.

Thave not allowed my daughter or
son to play with toy guns as I wanted
them to respect a gun asa tool. Also,
living near the beach in southern
California, there are a lot of people
that feel guns are not acceptable. I
‘gfew up on a ranch and hunting was a
way of life. My children are learning
gun safety from me just like I learned
from my granddad, If you ask them
what a gun is for, their answer is a
tool just like any other, but it has to
be respected,

“Show me the winner and I'll ask
who the trainer was.” It is a parent's
responsibility to teach the importance
of gun discipline; what is real, what
isa toy, what a gun can do, and how
to handle them. These folks who con-
demn before investigation will breed a
society of persons who do not respect
guns, or the importance of owning a
weapon. I have three children who
knew these things by age 6.

‘The cap gun versus real gun argument
is nothing but a political correctness
ploy. Growing up in the 50s, westerns
were very popular. As kids we got
to see the bad guy’ get shot and the
good guys win. At playtime we would
put on our holsters and cap pistols
0 out side and shoot ‘em up. But we
were also taught the difference be-
tween real guns and cap guns. My dad
‘made me memorize the gun safety
commandments, On my 7th birthday
was given a .410 single-shot shot-
gun, I was allowed to hunt by myself
after proving to my dad I was safety
conscious. I still enjoyed the cap guns
and the play time with my friends
where we shot it out. But I was trained
to know the difference between the
two. The biggest influence my dad
made in my developing mind was to
take me out back and shoot a mellon
with my shotgun and allow me to see
the devastation done, Take the time
and train a child and that child will

respect them for the tools they are.

Everyone says kids need to be kept
away from firearms but I believe
this Is wrong. If we keep the guns
from the kids who will be ready
to pick up the mantle of defense
when we need them? When I
joined the Marine Corps in 1975,
I knew about guns but not all my
fellow Marines did, One from New
York certainly did not. This lack of
knowledge resulted in myself and
‘two others getting shot on the rifle
range. One in the shoulder, one
in buttocks and me in the leg. If
‘we don’t teach our kids, they turn
out to be idiots and slaves. I don't
know about everyone else but 1
want my family to be free.
A. Mecann
Dickson, Tenn.
My young daughter, Savanna, age
10, does some shooting with me. I
taught her gun safety on my own,
as [used to be an IPSC range offi-
cer, and she shoots a pink Crick-
‘ett .22. We also practice archery
and shoot at our chickens with
slingshots when they head for the
garden or are crowing on the front
porch!
My little girl and I run around
shooting Nerf guns at each other,
and her friends join in if they
come over to visit. Overall, I think
that “playing guns" is great family
fun, plus it provides exercise work-
Ing off excess energy and valuable
Insights into handling firearms.
Kids learn about what guns do,
and there is less mystery about
the “big bad boogey gun,” since
they learn to handle them safely.
People who try to keep knowledge
of guns away from their children
just turn the guns into magical,
mysterious and enticing objects.

Practically every manufacturer of

the official U.S. military rifle
cartridge in 1954, although guns
for it were not ready until 1957,
In power, the .308 Winchester is superior to
the .300 Savage and almost equal to the .30-06. It
delivers about 100 fps less muzzle velocity than
the larger 30-06 with any given bullet weight
Most authorities consider the .308 suitable for
most North American big game, although it's

Ultimate
Challenge
Want to truly test your skills as a marksman?
Try your hand at long-range shooting. // By ick sones:
hen the trigger broke, I men-
tally called the shot center.
Within a second, I rolled off
the rifle and onto the spot-
ting scope. My heart sank.
‘The target was still going
down, but I had no interest in it. At 1,000 yards,
there is no seeing the bullet holes. The only way
the shooter knows where his shot went is when
the target comes back up from the pits with a
3-inch white spotter stuck in the bullet hole. On,
high mirage days, it's sometimes hard enough to
see that 3-inch spotter.
‘My concer was the wind. I'd fired the previ
ous shot with 15 clicks, or 7% minutes of right
wind on my rifle. The mirage in the scope now
indicated the wind was only worth about 10
clicks and it was falling. My shot was probably
way out to the right side of the target, maybe a
seven, or possibly a six. It would be easy to lose
the match by shooting one six or seven.
As I watched through the scope, the wind con-
tinued to fall off, and it began to come in from.
the left side. My target came up, and I grinned.
got lucky. The wind had dropped off just as I fired,
the shot and the spotter disc displayed a right
side X, It was on the line, but it was still an X. 1
swung my spotting scope over to Steve Nelson's

target. It was a miss. I like Steve, but I have to ad-
mit | was happy he'd shot a miss. He was the only
‘guy in Service Rifle class I was worried about, and
he was now 10 points down,
| looked back at the wind and it was building
stronger on the left side. This was clearly a wind
change, and the right wind I'd been so comfort-
able with through the relay was gone. I took off
the right windage and began clicking on left
wind ... 12, 13, 14 clicks of left wind after shoot-
ing an X with 15 clicks of right wind, My change
represented a movement of point of impact of
145 inches. The whole target frame is only 72
inches wide.
I watched the wind a few more seconds while
1 was plotting my shot and noting my windage
change. I dropped a round into the magazine,
and dropped the bolt. I checked the wind again,
cleared my vision, breathed the gun up into the
target, broke the trigger and prayed. Back on the
scope, the wind was still running steady at 14
mph. I plotted my call and shot location while
I watched the target carrier expose my last shot.
It was another X, this one in the center. It was
the best moment ever in my High Power shoot-
ing career, and I've told the story a thousand
times. And when I say a moment, [literally mean
4 moment. The whole process described aboveJohn Updike With one of the “shootingist”

most every form of shooting, but precision position shooting has always ap-
pealed to me, While I like the precision of benchrest competition because it
involves extremely accurate rifles and ammunition, I prefer a broader kind of
long-range shooting, where the skill of the shooter is more emphasized. Most
‘of my competitive shooting career was in the field of NRA High Power, and my
definition of long range might be different from someone from a different back-
ground, In High Power, long-range shooting begins at 800 yards as part of the
Palma course of fire. Mid-range shooting is done at 600 yards, and 200 and 300
yards are considered short range.
For most hunters and recreational shooters, any range beyond 300 yards is
often considered long range, and this comes with good reason. Any shot at a
game animal beyond 300 yards should only be attempted if the shooter has a
good working knowledge of the trajectory of his rifle, and some idea of the ef-
fects of wind. The primary reason for this is that a properly sighted-in rifle can
stay within 4 inches of point of aim out to about 300 yards. In most situations,
staying within 4 inches of point of aim is a reasonable goal and will suffice when,
hunting most large game.
Knowing Your Zero
Beyond 300 yards, almost all rifles begin to require holdover or elevation ad-
justment, and the effects of the wind become much more critical. The ability
to consistently make good shots at long range doesn’t require any special tal-
cent. It only requires preparation and judgment based on that preparation. Once

UNDERSTANDING
TWIST
Normally, twist rates for rifle barrels
present few problems. At tuly long
ranges, the wrong twist rate can
completely destroy a rifle’ ability
to shoot well because, as the bullet
slows down, the spinning motion
that stabilizes the bullet slows, and
it ean become so slow the bullet be-
comes unstable. Heavy bullets with
high ballistic coefficients maintain
stability longer and lose less speed
than lighter bullets, but they have
to be stabilized, and this requires a
faster or tighter twist because they
travel down the barrel slower.
Abullet that’s under-stabilized

can figure out what the wind is going to do to your bullet in the time it takes to
get to the target. At 1,000 yards, it takes a 180-grain Matchking from a 22-inch

5 mph, and you're off the paper with
little chance of getting back on.
This all means the little wind me-
ter you hold in your hand may not
help. It only measures the wind where
you're standing, and that may be
substantially different from the wind
where your bullet has to pass. On KD,
or Known Distance ranges, there are
normally wind flags, but the apparent
angle of the flag can fool you based on
your position on the range and these
‘can be confusing,
Probably the most reliable wind
indicator is mirage, the refraction of
light waves by heat. Mirage indicates
wind direction, speed in frequency
and amplitude. I find it on average
to be the most reliable way to gauge
wind. Under certain conditions of low
light, there can be an absence of mi-
rage, so It can’t always be counted on.
To properly read the amplitude and
frequency of the mirage, you need
some sort of horizontal line to com-
pare, I like to read the top edge of the
target, provided that’s a straight edge,
asit is ona KD range. At 600 yards, this
Is a good representation of the space
where the bullet spends the most time.
Remember to read an area above the
target because it will give you a more
realistic reading.
Ground speeds tend to be lower than
higher elevations where the bullet trav-
els. When you read mirage through a
scope, do so with the scope focused at
mid-range to give a better represen-
tation of strength and direction, The
common theory is that deflection at
short range has more affect because it’s
exaggerated by the distance, but it’s
been my experience that wind defle
tion has about the same effect through
all the bullet’s light because when the
bullet is further down range, it’s going
slower and therefore more affected. In
‘competitive shooting situations, most
long-range shooters fire their shots in
a very short length of time, reducing
the opportunity for wind changes.
Learning to reliably read wind is
time consuming, and I don’t think
there’s any other way to do it but to
shoot in the wind in situations where
you know within seconds where your
last bullet went. Until recently, the
only way to do this was to shoot on a
range with pit targets where someone
pulls and marks your target on every
shot. Now, there are several companies
who make cameras that will transmit
your group to your iPad, computer
screen or smartphone. Most of these
devices even flash or mark the last
shot. This is going to make learning to
read wind a lot easier for those dedi.

short-range shooting. The aerodynam-
le characteristics of the bullet become
an issue of paramount importance,
since the bullet stays in the air for such
along time. Up to about 300 yards, the
shape of the bullet has little effect on
trajectory. This is because the trajecto-
ry at short ranges is based on the bullet
at velocities very near muzzle velocity.
Once you get past 600 yards, veloc
ity falls off drastically and the falling
rate of the bullet remains the same. AS
an example, the 600 yard zero on my
MIA .308 was just 13 minutes higher
from 200 yards to 600 yards, but Thad
to add another 28 minutes to be on at
1,000 yards.
‘The effects of wind are similar but
quite a bit more linear. The faster the
bullet travels, the less the effect of
wind and gravity because the time
of flight to the target is shorter. This
Is why high velocity rounds are more
popular with long-range shooters. The
problem with the extreme end of high
velocity cartridges is throat erosion.
Most of the hyper-velocity cartridg-
es will bum the accuracy out of a good
barrel in under 1,000 rounds, while
rounds like .308 Winchester might get
as much a 5,000 rounds, Relating to
barrel life is the practice among most
conventional long-range shooters of
not tailoring loads to a specific barrel/
rifle, With a practical barrel life of no
more than 1,000 rounds, load testing
in lots large enough for statistical rel-
‘evance to find the best load could pos-
sibly use up the entire life of the rifle's
barrel. The normal practice is to find a
load that works well and use it without
spending time on load development
for a specific rifle/barrel combination.
Putting It All Together
Long-range shooting is still simply a
matter of learning how to accomplish
a task and using that knowledge to
accomplish it. No two shots are ever
quite the same, and successful long-
range shooting requires good. skills
and equipment, but it’s one of the

shooting. Once you've put a shot ex-

-300 Winchester Magnum
During the late 1950s, Winchester took
the .375 Holland & Holland Magnum
case and began to experiment with
making some new cases. They began
by shortening the case length from
2.85 inches down to 2.5 inches, so as
to fit properly in a long action rifle
(the same as the ,30-06). They necked
it up and down, resulting in a famous
trio of cartridges: the .264, .338 and
458 Winchester Magnums. These car-
tridges were quickly embraced by the
shooting world, filling several voids in
the cartridge lineup. So in 1963, when
Winchester announced that they
would introduce the fourth in the line,
the .300 Winchester Magnum, every-
one expected a similarly dimensioned
case necked to 308. Nah, Winchester
surprised everyone by extending the
case length out to 2.62 inches, which
is just about the longest case you can
stuff into a standard long-action rifle.

A full-value wind is perpendicular to the bul-
let's path. It blows from 9 o'clock to 3 o'clock, or
vice versa. It has more effect than wind of equal
speed from oblique angles. Wind from behind
you (6 o'clock) or in front (12 o’clock) has essen-
tially no effect at ordinary ranges. Why? Remem-
ber that a bullet clocking 3,000 fps encounters
terrific wind resistance even in still conditions.
It generates its own headwind, in fact a 2,000-
mph gale. The effect of a 20-mph headwind or
tallwind is negligible, At extreme range, a strongTiny bullets seem drift prone, but speed works in your favor to offset the effect of wind. Autor Photo
headwind or tailwind can show up in groups
from very accurate rifles. But, besides obvious
‘change in air resistance, along the bullet’s axis,
‘you must consider the bullet’s angle of flight. A
horizontal tailwind pressures the top of the bul-
let, and a horizontal headwind angles into its
belly. That’s because bullets travel nose-up and,
unlike porpoising arrows, stay that way through-
‘out their flight. A descending bullet is not a div-
ing bullet.
It is like a football thrown long. And more bul-
let weight lies behind mid-point than in front.
So, while the attitude of a bullet fired at a distant
target may not be off horizontally by much, or
stay absolutely constant in flight, you can as-
sume a mild tilt. A tailwind pushes down as it
pushes forward, while a headwind gives the bul-
let a lift as it boosts nose pressure. In sum, almost
every other variable you'll encounter shooting
long will have a greater effect on impact point
than will 6 o'clock or 12 o'clock winds.
Wind far from the muzzle, where your bullet
has lost speed, moves that bullet more than does
the same wind close up. On the other hand, a
wind-induced change in the bullet’ flight angle
at the muzzle is multiplied over distance. Think

of drift as a trajectory. Wind and gravity move
bullets in parabolic paths. Incidentally, rifling
twist can put a vertical component into drift.
Right-hand spin in a 3 o'clock breeze gives bul-
lets a lift to 10 o'clock. Wind from the left sends
those bullets to 4 o'clock.
‘Vulnerability to wind depends on bullet veloc-
ity and ballistic coefficient, or BC. Bullets of simi-
lar BC show roughly the same drift, For exam-
ple, Nosler's 130-grain .270 Partition has about
the same nose shape and sectional density as its
140-grain 7mm, 165-grain .308 and 210-grain

My introduction to wind came in smallbore
rifle matches. Moving from indoor to outdoor
ranges, I felt as though I'd been plucked from a
wading pool and dropped into the North Atlan-
tic. Wind flags and “windicators"—fans with tails
that swung on ball bearings—showed us wind
speed and direction. Even a light breeze could
shove a .22 bullet actoss a couple scoring rings.

nary a flip of their tails, while my
bullets jumped in and out of the 10-
ring. The flags at $0 and 100 yards,
however, affirmed that downrange
conditions were unstable. Wind at the
target could even run opposite that
at the line. I'd see flags in full flap at
100 yards, other flags limp at 50. Or
windicators would spin furiously to
the left, while mid-range flags lifted
to the right and 100-yard flags kicked
left again. A bullet sent through that
gauntlet flew a ziz-zag course; shoot-
ing during mixed signals was perilous.
The patter of shots would die out as
savvy marksmen waited for more fa-
vorable conditions.
Favorable doesn't necessarily mean
still. Itis possible to shoot well in wind,
if you're zeroed for that condition ot
“shade” for it. Zeroed for predominate
drift, you get more shooting time dur-
ing a match. You can afford to hold
your fire during let-offs and pick-ups,
or at least reduce the number of shots
you must fire under those conditions,
‘Smart shooters make notes about the
wind on a new range, so they learn
Its idiosyncrasies. The Spokane range,
where I often competed, is on a river-
bank, Wind typically angles across the
line from 7 or 8 o'clock, then bounces
off the bank and hits the targets from
4 o'clock. If you minded the wind only
at the line, you'd make a mistake.
Centerfire rifles can drive bullets
through moderate wind without sig-
nificant deflection at normal hunting
yardage. Even a 170-grain flat-nose
30-30 bullet drifts less than two inch-
es in a 10-mph full-value wind at 100
yards. A 25-mph wind, strong enough
to sway trees, pushes that .30-30 bul-
let only four inches. Pointed bullets
from the 30-06 fare better. Even wind
that picks up small dogs and trashcan
lids has little effect at modest ranges or
when the angle is acute, But, as trajec-
tory becomes steeper, the farther a bul-
let gets from the muzzle, so deflection
becomes greater at long range.
For any distance, when wind speed
doubles, you get double the drift
Halve wind speed, and you halve drift.
Reduce angle from 90 degrees and you
reduce drift proportionately. Change
shot distance, however, and the drift
may surprise you. A 130-grain .270
bullet launched at 3,000 fps drifts only
there so fast: in about 1/10-second. It

For many popular big-game loads, a
rule of thumb is to allow an inch of
drift at 100 yards. Triple that at 200.
Double the 200 drift at 300, and dou-
ble the 300 drift at 400. Bullets that
aren't as sleek or as fast test that rule,
but, for popular cartridges, discrepan-
cies are negligible until you get past
400. For the .223 and Kin, use 14
inches as the 100-yard drift figure. For
“woods” rounds like the .30-30, allow
two inches at 100, and triple the 200-
yard drift at 300.
A bullet’s rate of deceleration and
its vulnerability to wind increase with.
drag. A bullet the shape of a soup can
is not well adapted for flight. But light-
weight spitzers, like 50-grain 223s,
also have puny ballistic coefficients,
because their sectional densities (ra-
tio of weight to the square of diam-
eter) are low. A sleek bullet short for

its diameter can have as much trouble
cleaving air as a longer bullet with a
blunt nose. All else equal, fast bullets
buck wind better than slow ones, and
a bullet that retains its speed better
keeps a truer course through down-
range wind,
Rate of deceleration heavily influ-
ences long-range drift. Muzzle speed
can, in fact, become all but irrelevant.
Long noses with sharp tips give bul-
lets aerodynamic shape. But it’s easy
to give too much credit to the bullet
nose. The first .l-inch of the nose can
be flat, round or pointed without ma-
terially affecting trajectory or drift. It
is the ogive—the leading curve—that
matters more.
Boat-tail bullets offer little advan-
tage at normal hunting ranges, but
remain a unanimous choice of long-
range shooters. Far away, the boat-tail
shows an edge, which is why target
shooters favor it when firing on targets
set out as far as 600 and even 1,000
yards away.
No matter how well your bullet re-
sists wind, hitting at distance depends
on your ability to predict drift. Early
in my competitive shooting, rifleman
Dick Nelson (who helped Boeing de-
sign the first moon buggy), put it this
way: “Learn to read mirage and your
bullets will hop into the X-ring like
trained pigs.”
Mirage can show a target that isn't
there, by “floating” the image in the
direction the air currents are moving.
You can't see mirage at all distances
at once. You'll either see the strongest
mirage or the mirage at the range for
which your scope is focused. To get
the most information about the wind
that most affects bullets, competitive
marksmen focus their spotting scopes
to read mirage just shy of the targets.
Mirage that’s bumpy and moving
slowly indicates a light breeze. When
mirage disappears with no change in
light’ conditions, it’s often because
wind has picked up. Mirage that boils
vertically signals a still condition—but
beware, asa boil commonly precedes a
reversal in wind direction or, of course,
a pick-up. You're smart to zero for a
light prevailing breeze, then hold fire
during boils and reversals and shoot
during pick-ups and let-offs, com

SeWhy you should carry a back-up gun
By JIM WILSON
THE SECOND GUN
ack-up guns have been carried by
American lawmen and citizens, vir-
tually since the beginning of fire-
arms history. Though accounts vary,
James Butler “Wild Bill” Hickok
(1837-1876) may have used a Der-
ringer to end the life of Phil Coe, while Hickok
was an officer, in Abilene, Kan. Going out into
the street to check on the sound of gunshots,
Hickok came face to face with Coe, who already
had a gun in his hand. Reportedly, Hickok relied
‘on a Derringer, carried in his coat pocket, when
Coe fired a shot his way.
In modern times, the back-up gun has been
cartied in deep concealment, ready and wai
ing to allow the defensive shooter to stay in the
fight. One of the main uses for the back-up gun
is when the primary handgun has been hit by
an attacker’s bullet and rendered. useless. Un-
trained shooters often aim at the thing they are
most concerned about and, in many cases, that
is the handgun. This very thing happened to one
of the FBI agents involved in a famous shootout
‘with Miami bank robbers in 1986 when his auto-
loading pistol was taken out of commission by
incoming fire. The middle of a fierce gunfight is
no place to be holding an inoperative handgun,
so transitioning to a back-up may just save your
life one day.
Another use for the back-up gun is when the
primary gun runs dry. It is extremely difficult to
fundigest.com
count the number of rounds one has fired when
there are bullets flying all around.
‘We generally know that we are out of ammo
when the auto’s slide locks to the rear or the
revolver hammer clicks on an empty chamber.
While a speed reload may be the solution, there
can be times when it is more advisable to transi-
tion to another gun. Carrying a back-up gun pro-
vides the option to resolve a particular problem
in more than one way.
Experiencing a jam or malfunction in the pri-
‘mary handgun is another reason to consider the
back-up gun. For our purposes here, a malfunc-
tion is a problem that can be resolved with the
hands, while a jam is something that needs tools
to fix. (In the case of a jam, the gun will prob-
ably need to go to a gunsmith to get it back in
working order.) Malfunctions such as a stovepipe
or failure to feed may be cleared fairly quickly,
if the shooter has practiced the proper clearance
drills, However, resolving a double-feed situation
takes much longer. In revolvers, a cartridge case
slipping under the extractor can take quite some
time to clear, as isthe case when the extractor rod
has backed out. Again, one should know how to
Clear the various malfunctions common to their
handgun, but a back-up gun provides another
option to dealing directly with the problem.
Choosing a back-up gun to fit a person’s specif-
ic needs has never been easier. There was a time,
in the not too distant past, when the only selec-

tions consisted of a few small .38 Spe-
cial revolvers and a handful of small
auto-loaders generally chambered for
32 ACP or .380 ACP. Thanks to an
increased interest in personal-defense
and modern technology, that has all
changed. Polymer construction has
allowed for some very small pistols,
and modern technology allows us to
have 9mm, .45 ACP and .357 Magnum,
back-up guns of a diminutive size that
were formerly only dreamed of. The
police officer and armed citizen can.
now carry a back-up gun that is small
and lightweight enough to be comfort-
able, yet one that still packs a signifi-
‘ant payload.
‘Theammunition companies haven't
been asleep on the job, either. Ad-
vanced bullet designs have increased
the defensive performance of hand-
‘gun loads, so that a .32 or 380 auto, if
that is your choice, are not to be taken
lightly by any attacker.
‘Today, there are so many good back-
up guns available that it is virtually
impossible to list all of the suitable
candidates, Instead, let’s look at some
of the characteristics that all good
back-up guns should possess,
‘The first important characteristic of
a back-up gun should be reliability. It
must function. And it must function
reliably with the ammunition cho-
sen. Fortunately, most handguns from
reputable manufacturers will meet this,
test, Cate should be taken with auto
pistols to test each magazine, too. The
‘garbage can is the place for any maga-
Zine that doesn’t work. Using quality
magazines, quality ammunition, and
keeping the pistol properly cleaned
and lubricated will go a long way to-
wards insuring reliability.
I still carry a five-shot revolver as
back-up, because of the reliability is-
sue, though I will also freely admit
that part of my choice is due to famil-
iarity. Still, the double-action revolver
is about as reliable a gun as man is
capable of creating, and it will stand
more neglect than the average auto
pistol. However, today that is more
‘a matter of splitting hairs, thanks to
the increased reliability of the modem
semi-auto.
‘The back-up gun should be small
and lightweight enough that it can
gundigest.combe comfortably worn throughout the waking hours of the
day. While any defensive handgun should be comforting
Instead of comfortable, if it is too heavy, a person will start
looking for excuses to leave it behind—you're only run-
ning down to the comer store for a loaf of bread. What
could possibly happen?
‘The back-up gun should be powerful enough to reliably
stop an attack. For most of us, that means it should be .38
Special, 9mm, or larger (although a good argument can
be made for the .380 and .32 autos with modem defen-
sive ammunition). We often hear the argument that any
handgun caliber will kill a man, when the bullet is properly
placed. But we are not concerned with killing, nor are we
concerned with the fact that an attacker hit with a .22 will
die in a few hours or days. We are concerned with ending
the confrontation as quickly and efficiently as possible.
‘The smart person will carry the most powerful handgun
that he or she can shoot quickly and accurately and con-
ceal effectively. The task of the back-up gun is to save your
life. Don’t skimp and expect a little dog to do a big dog's
job.
Where should you carry your back-up gun? Ankle hol-
sters are comfortable to wear and will conceal a small pis-
tol quite nicely. But getting to them is the problem. Draw-
ing from an ankle holster requires one to either kneel or
to stand on one leg during the draw, Neither position Is a
‘good place to be in the middle of a gunfight.
I thinka far better choice is to carry the back-up gun some-
where around the mid-line of the body. Pocket carry makes
a lot of sense, assuming one is not wearing tight jeans. The
pocket chosen for carrying the back-up gun should be emp-
ty of everything else; you sure don't want to make your draw
and find your key ring hanging from the pistols rear sight.
Numerous holster companies offer some excellent choic-
es in pocket holsters. I prefer the leather ones manufac-
tured with the rough side of the leather on the outside.
This creates a bit of friction between the holster and the
pocket lining during the draw and allows the holster to
remain in the pocket.
Another good carry method for back-up guns is to carry
in the waistband, under the shirt. Several companies offer
elastic bands that fit around the waist and have an integral
holster for the small handgun. If you're into western wear,
a snap-button shirt will speed up your draw considerably.
If not, lower buttons can be fastened to the front tab of the
shirt so that it appears to be buttoned, while Velcro strips
that have been sewn on actually close the shirtfront. Either
way, the shirtfront can be quickly ripped open to access the
back-up gun.
Several companies are now making T-shirts that have
pistol pockets on either side, just under the armpit. These
can be quite comfortable, but one still has to find a way
to get the shirt front open quickly. In a similar vein, law
enforcement officers will find some manufacturers making
holsters that can be fastened to the side tabs of the ballistic
vest worn under the uniform shirt.

spring pushes it back into place, chambering another shell
and locking the rotating bolt head into the barrel via steel
lugs. There's no need for adjustment and no need for ex-
tensive cleaning of fouled gas systems on the Inertia-Driven
system design
‘The Ethos performs like other Benellis of the past, which
is to say very well. But the new Ethos has some welcome
additions, namely a large, rounded, easy-to-access cartridge
drop button and a bigger bolt release. Another key feature
is the patented Easy Locking System, which makes it easier
to lock the bolt in place, Older Benellis required you to drop
the bolt hard to rotate the bolt head and lock the action
for firing, If you didn’t, the gun didn’t fire, The new system
eliminates much of that worry. It worked flawlessly for me,
and | even tried to lightly drop the bolt to see if it would
fire. It did, locking into place each time, even when 1 inten-
tionally screwed up. The large, easy-to-use bolt release is a
nice upgrade that will allow hunters to load more quietly.
Ethos barrels are stamped with the term “Power Bore Crio
Barrel.” For those who aren't familiar with the concept,
Benelli’ engineers freeze the barrels, and this process is le-
signed to help align the molecules in the steel for a more
consistent and accurate patterning. The rib is carbon fiber,
and the Ethos offers the option to change rib heights as,
needed based on where you want to center your point of
impact. The gun I tested had a red fiber optic bead, but

What was the path you took

‘That is a long story. I will give
you the abridged version. When I

‘That gave me eight great years of
