THE CONGREGATION

Dearly Beloved Brethren in Christ:
Matins is the Morning Service before the Divine Liturgy for Sundays and
Feast Days.
The Octoechos (8 Tones of the Resurrection/Sunday Hymns) or Festal Hymns
of the Day are used in conjunction with this Service Book, which are
obtainable from various Orthodox Sites on the Internet or can currently
be downloaded from Marguerite Paizis on Scribd - or received directly
via email. (Refer contact details on the cover.)

Matins is an essential part of Sunday and Feast Day Liturgical Worship for it
consists of the Morning Psalms, the Resurrection and/or Festal Hymns
and Gospel Lessons pertaining to the Glorious Resurrection of our Lord
and Saviour, Jesus Christ, or to the Feast being commemorated.
The beautiful Hymns of our Orthodox Faith are an essential part of Christian
Worship for they provide us with yet another vital aspect of Christ and
His Divine Teachings, as well as revealing various facts concerning not
only our Lord but also His Ever Blessed, All Holy Mother and the great
Saints and Holy Martyrs whom we commemorate each day and whose
good examples we strive to imitate.
There are 11 Resurrection Gospel Lessons, which concern our Lord Jesus
Christs Appearance to His Apostles and Disciples during the 40 days
after His Glorious Resurrection until His Ascension into Heaven. These are
read consecutively during every Sunday Matins and, not only do they
provide us with Christs final Commandments, but they also remind us of
our own impending Resurrection one day. (Refer to the Festal Calendar
for the prescribed Reading.)
Our Lord returned to His Apostles and Disciples to show them to prove to
those who needed physical proof that He had indeed Resurrected just
as we too will be Resurrected as He has Promised us whether we
believe it or not. It is also Gods Great Mercy and Comfort for those who
mourned for Christ and - throughout the ages for those who mourn
their loved ones.

Blessed art Thou, O Virgin
Theotokos: for through Him Who
became Incarnate of Thee, Hades is
led captive, Adam is recalled from
the dead, the Curse is made void, Eve
is set free, Death is slain, and we
have been endowed with Life.
Wherefore we cry
aloud, extolling
in song: Blessed art Thou, O Christ
our God, in Whose Sight it is thus
well-pleasing. Glory to Thee!

Once we become familiar with the Order of the Matins Service and the
Divine Liturgy through regular participation, it does become much
easier and less confusing.
Pay careful attention to the written instructions, which I have tried to include
wherever necessary. (And do participate by responding to the Prayers
and Supplications, reciting the Creed and the Lords Prayer, as well as
singing the familiar Hymns in unison with the Choir.)

GOSPEL (SUNDAY) RESURRECTION ACCOUNTS CONCERNING THE GLORIFICATION OF GOD OR
THE GREAT DOXOLOGY.
THE APPEARANCES OF OUR RESURRECTED LORD JESUS CHRIST TO HIS DISCIPLES WERE POSITIVE
PROOF OF HIS RESURRECTION AS WELL AS BEING A GREAT COMFORT TO THEM IN THEIR INTENSE
SORROW.
THIS WAS ESPECIALLY TRUE CONCERNING THE EVER BLESSED THEOTOKOS TO WHOM CHRIST FIRST
APPEARED AND WHO IS CRYPTICALLY REFERRED TO AS THE OTHER MARY, THE MOTHER OF
JAMES. THE SECOND APPEARANCE WAS TO ST MARY OF MAGDALA WHO WAS ALONE IN THE
GARDEN SURROUNDING THE TOMB, THE THIRD APPEARANCE AGAIN TO ST MARY OF MAGDALA AND
HER COMPANIONS WHO WERE ON THE WAY TO JERUSALEM, THE FOURTH WAS TO ST PETER, THE
FIFTH WAS TO ST LUKE AND ST CLEOPAS - TWO OF HIS APOSTLES WHO WERE WALKING TO
EMMAUS, THE SIXTH TO ALL THE HOLY APOSTLES, EXCEPT ST THOMAS, THE SEVENTH TO THE ELEVEN
APOSTLES, THE EIGHTH APPEARANCE TO SEVEN APOSTLES WHO WERE FISHING OFF SHORE IN THE
LAKE OF TIBERIAS, THE NINTH APPEARANCE TO MORE THAN 500 BRETHREN ON A MOUNTAIN, THE
TENTH TO ST JAMES AND THE ELEVENTH TO ALL HIS DISCIPLES AND APOSTLES (120 WITNESSES)
ON THE DAY OF HIS ASCENSION.
FOR THE SAME PURPOSE THE HOLY CHURCH ORDAINED SPECIAL HYMNS COMMEMORATING THESE
HOLY APPEARANCES, WHICH ARE CALLED THE RESURRECTION EOTHINON DOXASTIKON EACH
CONTAINING THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THOSE APPEARANCES OF OUR RISEN LORD FOR THAT

THE KONTAKION & OIKOS ARE READ AT MATINS EXCEPT ON GREAT FEASTS.
THE FINAL
PHRASE IS REPEATED. THESE WERE ORIGINALLY A VERSE SERMON CONSISTING OF A PROEMIUM
FOLLOWED BY A SERIES OF LONGER STANZAS OR OIKOI, ALL ENDING WITH THE SAME PHRASE,
LIKE A REFRAIN. THEY WERE GRADUALLY DISPLACED BY THE CANONS. NOW THE PROEMUIM OR
KONTAKION AND THE FIRST OIKOS SURVIVE. THE KONTAKION IS ALSO READ AT THE HOURS AND
CHANTED DURING THE DIVINE LITURGY, ALTHOUGH THESE ARE SEASONAL LIKE THE KATAVASIAS.
ST ROMANOS [6TH CENTURY] WAS THE GREATEST COMPOSER OF KONTAKIA THAT ARE STILL IN USE.
17
THE SYNAXARION IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWS THE KONTAKION DURING MATINS. THESE ARE SHORT
EXPLANATIONS OF THE SAINTS AND THE FEAST FOR EACH DAY THAT ARE READ FROM THE
MENAION.
18
THE KATAVASIA REPRESENT THE DESCENT FROM HEAVEN OF THE SON OF GOD, OUR LORD JESUS
CHRIST: HIS NATIVITY AND HIS ASCENSION. THE KATAVASIAS MEAN HYMNS OF [CHRISTS]
DESCENSION. THEY CONSIST OF NINE PRINCIPAL ODES. THE CHANTER WOULD DESCEND TO
THE MIDDLE OF THE SOLEAS TO CHANT THESE HYMNS AND THEN ASCEND TO HIS SEAT TO
COMPLETE THEM. THE BISHOP, IF IN ATTENDANCE, WOULD DESCEND ONE STEP FROM HIS THRONE
TO CHANT THE FIRST KATAVASIA AND ASCEND TO RETURN TO HIS SEAT.
BEING POETICAL
COMPOSTIONS SET TO SPECIAL TUNES, KATAVASIAS ARE ALSO CALLED HERMOSES, MEANING
KEY OR MEASURE BECAUSE THEY REPRESENT THE KEYS TO THE ODES THAT FOLLOW.

TAKEN FROM THE SAYINGS OF THE EVER BLESSED THEOTOKOS AND OF ST ZACHARIAS THE PRIEST
AND FATHER OF ST JOHN THE BAPTIST AND FORERUNNER OF CHRIST OUR LORD.
FURTHERMORE, THE 2ND ODE IS OMITTED THROUGHOUT THE YEAR AND IS ONLY USED DURING THE

THE PROKEIMENON IS READ AT THE ENTRANCE OF OUR LORD &
SAVIOUR IN REFERENCE TO THE FAITH OF OUR ANCIENT FATHERS
OF THE OLD COVENANT.
THESE ARE THE PROPHECIES OF THE
HOLY PROPHETS AND THE SYMBOLS WHEREBY GOD PREPARED THE
HENCE, AFTER THE
WORLD TO RECEIVE CHRIST OUR LORD.
PROKEIMENON, A VERSE OF THE PSALMS IS RECITED OR THE
READING OF THE FEAST IS READ DURING HOLY VESPERS OF A
GREAT FEAST.
THE PROKEIMENON THAT FOLLOWS THE ANABATHMI ACTUALLY MEANS
INTRODUCTION AND SIGNIFIES A DIFFERENT STANZA OR TUNE FOR
THE HYMNS.
THE PROKEIMENON OF THE EPISTLES INDICATES THAT THE
APOSTLES WHO PREACHED CHRIST ACCORDING TO THE NEW
COVENANT WERE PRECEDED BY THE HOLY PROPHETS WHO HAD
FORETOLD HIS COMING.

HYMN THAT IS

IS A SHORT

USUALLY READ AND NOT CHANTED, WHICH
REPLACES
THE
FEASTS TOGETHER WITH A HOLY GOSPEL READING.
WHEN THE ISRAELITES WERE RELEASED FROM THEIR CAPTIVITY IN BABYLON, THEY ASCENDED TO
JERUSALEM, BECAUSE IT IS SITUATED HIGHER THAN BABYLON.
THEY SANG PSALMS, WHICH
SYMMACHOS AND THEODOTION CALLED ASCENSION HYMNS AND WHICH THE SEVENTY WHO
TRANLATED THE OLD TESTAMENT INTO GREEK (THE SEPTUAGINT) CALLED PRAISE SONGS OF THE
ASCENSION.
THESE CONSISTED OF 15 PSALMS, WHICH WERE SUNG IN PRAISE OF GOD BEGINNING WITH PSALM
119 AND WERE SUNG AT THE VARIOUS STATIONS WHERE THEY RESTED SO THEY ARE ALSO CALLED
RESTING PSALMS
WHEN THE ISRAELITES HAD BUILT THE GREAT TEMPLE IN JERUSALEM THE PRIESTS WOULD SING THESE
PSALMS AS THEY ASCENDED THE STEPS TO THE HOLY PLACE, RECITING A PSALM AT EACH STEP,
WHICH WERE THEN CALLED STEPS STATIONS OR ASCENTS.
9
THE FIRST ANTIPHON - TONE 4 IS ALWAYS SUNG ON FEASTS SO THE PROKEIMENON ON FEASTS
ND
IS ALWAYS SUNG IN TONE 4. SOME USE THE FINAL HYMN FROM THE 2
ANTIPHON IN TONE 4

RATHER THAN REPEAT THE 3
