IEEE Power System Paper-Modelling STATCOM Into Power Systems

This paper establishes a Phillips-Heffron linearized model for power systems installed with a STATCOM. The model demonstrates how to analyze a STATCOM's damping effect on power system oscillations and design a STATCOM stabilizer to improve stability. Both single-machine infinite-bus and multi-machine power systems are examined. The model shows that a STATCOM DC voltage regulator can negatively influence oscillations, while a STATCOM stabilizer superimposed on the AC voltage regulator can counteract this effect.

Abstract - This paper establishes the linearized PhillipsHeffron model of a power system installed with a STATCOM
and demonstrates the applications of the model in analysing
the damping effect of the STATCOM and designing
STATCOM stabilizer to improve power system oscillation
stability. Both cases of single-machine infinite-bus and multimachine power systems are studied and an example power
system is presented, which show the negative damping
influence of STATCOM DC voltage regulator on power
system oscillations and effectiveness of STATCOM stabilizer
superimposed on STATCOM AC voltage regulator to
counterattack the negative damping effect.

The Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) is

based on the principle that a voltage source inverter
generates a controllable AC voltage source behind a
transformer leakage reactance so that the voltage difference
across the reactance produces active and reactive power
exchange between the STATCOM and the transmission
network. In [l] and [2], a unified Phillips-Hefion model of
a power system is established for three major types of
FACTS devices installed in the system, Static Var
Compensator(SVC),
Thyristor-Controlled
Series
Compensator (TCSC) and Thyristor-Controlled Phase
Shifter (TCPS). Subsequently, the model has been used for
the analysis and design of damping functions of these three
FACTS devices. Hence in this paper, the Phillips-Heffkon
model of power systems installed with a STATCOM is
derived, which turns out to have the same configuration of
the unified model for SVC, TCSC and TCPS. Thus the
STATCOM is added into the category of FACTS devices to
be described by the unified Phillips-Heeon model.

The DC voltage regulator of the STATCOM controls
the DC voltage across the DC capacitor of the STATCOM.
which adopts PI control. Simple analysis based on the
linearized model of the power system presented above
indicates that the proportional control of the DC voltage
regulator of the STATCOM provides the power system with
negative damping torque. Whilst the integral control of the
DC voltage regulator contributes no damping to system
oscillations. This application of the linearized PhillipsHeffion model is confirmed by the computational and
simulation results in an example power system.
