Treemendous Arbor-town

THE launch of RMIT plans and a book promoting a whole

township arboretum in Ballan got the green thumbs up from
local politicians and environmental activists.
At the launch on Friday, March 20, member for Buninyong
Geoff Howard said he welcomed the plan of greening Ballans
streets by creating an arboretum throughout the town.
The tree planting designs developed as part of this
competition will inspire how our community may look in
the future by integrating innovative tree planting with urban
planning, Mr Howard said.
I look forward to watching this project evolve through what

is sure to deliver a major benefit to Ballan and an attraction

across the region.
Guest speaker Dr Greg Moore congratulated the RMIT
students on their designs.
I think you have got onto a real winner here. You are
embarking on something that is farsighted and that will be
quite unique if you pull this off, the Trust for Nature board
trustee said.
Its not just decorative, not just pretty, it is functional.
Dr Moore supported the use of shade trees in towns, cities
and regions to help reduce temperatures by 4 6 degrees.

He said trees also helped reduce wind factor, protected

By planting trees he said: It is us that make the difference.

In March last year the Ballan Arboretum Group was formed
to begin developing the concept of a whole town arboretum,
after Stephanie Day had a vision and found support from
like-minded Ballan residents. The book was a result of a
14-week investigation by highly engaged students who
developed diverse designs and solutions.

Conflict and compassion on display

As 2015 commemorates the centenary of ANZAC, the Bacchus Marsh Historical Society has explored how conflict and
compassion has shaped the district.
A memorial display will be on show from Sunday April 19,
which features a presentation of the First World War and is
part of the 2015 National Trust Heritage Month.
Bacchus Marsh and District Historical Society President,
Chris Bronchinetti said the display highlighted the lives of
local soldiers and was affiliated with the National Trusts
theme: Conflict and Compassion.
Our display is of our local soldiers in World War One. There
are photos of our soldiers, army records, Avenue of Honours

of the district and articles from the paper of the day, The Bacchus Marsh Express, she said.
[There are] also articles from the paper of the Belgium Relief Fund, the Red Cross and some articles when the trains
brought the local boys home from war in 1919.
Ms Bronchinetti said the society had also been fortunate
enough to receive a copy of Trooper William Wests photo
album, which included his time away at war.
A copy of the album was donated courtesy of Trooper
Wests nephew, Mr Alan West, she said.
The display is now available for viewing at the Lerderderg
Library, and an open day will be held by the historical society on April 19 from 10am to 4pm.

The Ballan and District

Health and Care Facility received a generous boost in
early March.
The $1,600 donation by the
Ballan Sub-Group of Ballarat Legacy to compensate
the use of the community
bus for monthly outings for
Legacy widows.
The donation was a grant
provided by the Victorian
Veterans Council, and will
help promote the monthly
outings, which are a highlight in the lives of the ladies
who participate.
Legacy is dedicated to caring for the families of deceased and incapacitated
veterans and assists around
90,000 widows and 1,900
children and dependants.

Binding the rural history

A rather delightful book about the history of the
Beremboke and Mt Wallace area is currently in the
making.

Beremboke local of 40 years Deirdre Wilmot has applied

for a Local History Grant to help with the project with
a letter of support proudly provided by the Moorabool
News.
Its a matter of partnerships reaching back in time
Ms Wilmot has been consulting extensively with the
Moorabool News prior incarnation, the Ballan News, to
research the project.

This area is particularly good because it got reported

in the old Ballan News going back to 1872, the Geelong
Advertiser in the 1840s, and the old Ballarat Times from
the goldrush days, then theres the Weekly Times and
Table Talk which recorded country life, so theres quite a
few sources, Ms Wilmot said.

And its a medium she is familiar with, having previously

worked as Curator of the State Librarys newspaper
collection.

Ive been looking at old newspapers, public records,

shire records, government records, maps from when the
original properties were laid out from about 1868 to 1880.

Ive read local stories about what was happening, and

comparing their views to what was in the papers - they
used to record every time there was a picnic, a party, a
fete at the hall, and the Letters to the Editor, they were
quite fun.
Its a combination of government sources, family stories,
and newspaper stories, and anything else I can get my
hands on.

The book is set to cover from settlement in the 1830s up to

1900, and will take about three years to complete while
Ms Wilmot is also completing her Doctorate in Education.

Theres just so much - theres probably a second book in

there to keep me occupied.
One of the interesting things about this area, its almost
a microcosm of what history was like. Theres maps that
virtually havent changed, theres been very, very few
realignments - you can almost trace property by property
by property on the old maps in the State Library.

Ive been speaking with two families from the original

settlers, and theres also people living in Ballan who still
have family connections - someone in their family who
lived out here, or owned land out here.
And already Ms Wilmot has found oral history to be
quite a powerful source.

I had one gentleman telling me stories about when his

family lived out here, he was born in the 1920s, and he
was talking about a story in the newspaper of a child
that drowned in a dam. When he talked about it, he said
this is where it happened and my grandmother wouldnt
mention that childs name or talk about it his telling me
is different to reading a story about a child drowning in a
dam, his grandmother was quite traumatised by it. Its a
different perspective.
And about when the Geelong-Melbourne road came
through, he was telling stories about trying to get into
Geelong and the road was washed out - its small things,
but its personal experiences and family stories about
what happened.

Emile Just was the first teacher at Beremboke; at aged

19 he became Head Teacher of the Common School No
1071, Beremboke, which he opened on September 5,
1870. A tender was called for the erection of a teachers
cottage in 1874.
At a public tea in March 1872, the parents of Beremboke
scholars expressed themselves as well please with the
way Mr Just had brought the children forward.
It became a contentious issue about costs, the role of
the Common committee and the stockmen until it was
disbanded in 1896.
Post office was opened at Beremboke in 1872.
In October 1884 200 people attended a picnic in Mr
Moggs paddock (the site of the present Mt Wallace Hall.
In March 1885 whooping cough was so serious in the
district that both Mt Wallace and Beremboke schools
were closed.
In early 1892 Mt Wallace and Beremboke farmers were
very happy to have a creamery at Mt Wallace but in 1895
the business collapsed and they no longer had access
to it.

reappointed for a further five-year term and at the April 2
council meeting in Bacchus Marsh officially signed his
contract, witnessed by Mayor Paul Tatchell and Woodland
Ward Cr. Pat Toohey.

It gets you sucked in a bit - you think youll start looking

up about the land, and the stories about the people come
up. There was a story about a mother airing mattresses
outside, and a Black snake was in it, and it bit her, and
the child had to run through the bush to get help from
the neighbours house, and then the neighbour had to run
through the bush - skirts and all!
The book is going to be a story, its not just going to be
this happened, and then this happened and I hope it will
be of interest not only to people who live in the district,
because its a good historical story.

the diggings

As descendants of a fiery
couple involved in the Eureka
Stockade,
Gordon
resident Jane Gardner and
her two sons celebrated the
160th anniversary of the
uprising by sewing an exact
replica flag.
The flag was raised at the
anniversary celebrations on
a recreated Eureka flagpole.
Ms Gardner explained that
she, along with Daniel and
Sean Weigall, are descended
from Timothy and Anastasia
Hayes youngest child Ellen,
on their paternal fathers/
grandfathers side.
The couple emigrated from
Ireland for the opportunities
afforded in Australia.
The family of seven sailed
on the Mobile a journey
of three months, with their
youngest just five months
old. There were very few
houses in Ballarat in those
days. The family lived in a
tent in King Street next to St
Alipius Church and School,
where Anastasia became the
first school mistress.
There was no running
water, no electricity and no
supermarkets! A sixth child

and partner of Peter Lalor
and Duncan Gillies with
Gillies later becoming Victorias 14th Premier.
In the year of the rebellion,
Timothy addressed the miners in favour of the Ballarat
Reform League and was
appointed Chairman of the
10,000 men.
And so I feel bound to
ask you gentlemen to speak
out your mind. Should any
member of the League be
dragged to the lock-up for
not having the licence, will
a thousand of you volunteer
to liberate the man? he is
reported to have asked, to a
resounding Yes! Yes!
Timothy was arrested as a
leader of the rebellion and
tried for, though later found
not guilty of, High Treason,
with Anastasia suckling
baby Ellen in the courthouse
at his trial.
But Timothy was not the
only Hayes with a role in the
rebellion.
Anastasia had the reputation of being known as a
firebrand on the goldfields,
frequently
complaining
about the treatment of the
miners by the authorities.
She encouraged Timothy to
take a leading role amongst
those in Ballarat who were
expressing their dissatisfaction with conditions on the
goldfields, Ms Gardner
explained.
Three women - including Anastasia Hayes - were
asked to sew the flag and
have it ready for the meeting
at Bakery Hill in November
1854.
The flag is widely regarded
as the most important piece
of Crown evidence for the
charge that the diggers
maliciously and traitorously did raise upon a pole
a certain flag as a standard
and collect round the said
standard and did then solemnly swear to defend each
other with the intention of
levying war against our said
Lady the Queen according
to the Eureka Trials Public
Records.
Anastasia was also there to
help when doctors came to
amputate Peter Lalors arm,
which had been shattered by
bullets when the stockade
was attacked.
Anastasia assisted by
holding the bowl to catch
the blood as his arm was
removed.
It is said she
wrapped the arm and threw
it down a mine shaft - to be
retrieved later and buried,
Ms Gardner said.
After the battle, the flag was
torn down and damaged
with swords and bullets by
troopers.
The soldiers burned down
the Hayes tent and all their
possessions were destroyed.

For the tenth consecutive
year, Bacchus Marsh Rotary
Club treasurer Russell Gilbert (pictured) has ridden
1,000 kilometres for charity.
Since 2005, Mr Gilbert has
taken part in the annual
Rotary District Ride to Conference, which raises money
for a variety of local charities
and hospitals, with a strong
focus on health research.
However this decade feat
is not the only thing the
Bacchus Marsh accountant
has to celebrate, 2015 also
marks the year in which he
has donated $50,000 to assist a number of different
charities.
Each year Mr Gilbert, in accordance with Account(able)
Bacchus Marsh, has been a

gold sponsor for the event,

which includes a $5,000 donation to the Rotary trust
fund.
Since 2009 we have donated to Ovarian Cancer
Research, however before
that proceeds went to things
like prostate cancer, heart
monitors for the Childrens
Hospital and defibrillators
for newborn babies, Mr Gilbert said.
The 2015 Ride to Conference
was held at The Giro Tasmania in Hobart on Friday,
March 6 and covered almost
1,000-kilometres over seven
days, with an increasing
altitude gain of over 11,000
metres.
After a hernia operation in
November, Mr Gilbert said
that he initially didnt expect
to finish the course, however

it was his determination that

took him to the finish line.
On the second day we rode
up the mountains and it was
really strenuous work, we
could only manage about
8km/hr so it took a long time
to go even a short distance,
he said.
Then it started raining and
everything was absolutely
soaked. I think I got pretty
close to hypothermia but
you just switch off, keep riding and dont worry about
anything. Ever year has its
bad days.
Along side his 25-person
ride team, Mr Gilbert helped
raise $60,000 for ovarian
cancer and said he looks forward to participating again

As ANZAC day fast approaches, Moorabool Shire

war veterans are being
sought in order to compile a
record for the Bungaree and
District Historical Society.
In conjunction with the
Bungaree Football Club and
Bungaree Recreation Reserve, the society has been
working tirelessly in organising the 2015 ANZAC day
event.
Bungaree Historical Society
president, Dennis Spielvogel
said the society was looking
for any information regard-

ing residents from the shire

who had participated in the
First World War.
Our society was successful in obtaining funding for
the erection of a permanent
monument to all those men
and women who served in
Australias armed forces, he
said.
If you know of anyone,
a relative, a neighbour or
a friend who served in the
First World War please contact us as soon as possible so
we can include the information in our display.
The unveiling of the display
will be revealed on Saturday

April 25 at 11am at the Bungaree Recreation Reserve,

and will be the centre point
of the ANZAC day game between Bungaree and Clunes
Football clubs.
The best player will receive
the ANZAC Day Medal on
the day, Mr Spielvogel said.
We are inviting all exservice men and women
to attend the unveiling as
our special guests, however the unveiling is open to
everybody.

We also hold group outings and have been to places

such as Tahbilk Winery, Serendip, Science Works, TinaKori Wildlife Sanctuary to
name a few.
The group has come a
long way since its humble
beginnings.
We werent sure if anyone
would come along to that
first workshop we really hoped someone would!
Needless to say we were
completely blown away
when we did a count and
realised there were 42 people in the Gordon Hall that
night. Over the course of
our first year our membership grew from the eight
founding members to just
over 50 members.
We have a closed FaceBook
group and we encourage
sharing of images amongst
our members and followers.
Our website has also been
incredibly successful with
well over 65,000 visits in just
over 12 months.
Workshops are held at the
Gordon Hall on the fourth
Friday of each month, starting at 7pm.

Each month, a group of up

to 60 shutterbugs ranging
from teens to octogenarians,
from beginners to professionals, gather at the Gordon
Hall.
It really is phenomenal
growth for a photography
club that started out as eight
friends with cameras, and is
just over one year old.
As Central Highlands imaging and Photographic
Association Inc (CHiPA) Secretary Noni Shugg explains,
it is different to many clubs
in that it is not focussed on
competition, rather its main
focus is on helping people

photography as well as helping to develop their skills
and confidence.
Our workshops are always
hands on and informative.
We generally have quite
a few stations set up, so
after the presentation for
the evening, we set about
practising what has been
taught, she said.
At CHiPA we share the
knowledge we have and we

encourage a collaborative
and supportive environment; we are fortunate to
have some very skilled photographers in our midst who
are willing to share what
they know with the rest of
us.
We encourage our members to remain active between workshops and to
help with that we run a scavenger hunt each month, the
idea of which is to encourage our members to get out
and photograph things they
may not normally think to
photograph and to encourage them to become more
familiar with their cameras.
CHiPA has since had exhibitions this year and last at
the Bacchus Marsh Public
Hall for the Harvest Festival,
as well as at the Strawberries
and Cherries Festival last
year and again in November.
We had over 300 images
at each of the exhibitions
our members have varied
interests so our workshops
over the past 12 months have
looked at topics such as table
top/still life, macro, splash
art, smoke, portraiture,
light painting, capturing
lightning.

The push to
get active
Im pleased council is getting behind this initiative
and hopefully we will have
many members of the community take part in the local pram walk in Bacchus
Marsh on April 20. As well
as hitting the 30 minutes a
day of activity for that day
in April, the event will give
people a chance to meet new
people and be doing something healthy for their mind
and body, Cr Tatchell said.
The pram walk was an initiative of a local playgroup
and will depart from St Andrews Church car park at
1.30pm on Monday, April 20.

prams are invited to come
along for a fun walk, Cr
Tatchell said.
Participants can track their
physical activity on an Active April app and use the
online activity tracker to log
daily activity and track progress throughout the month.

Hair today, gone tomorrow

The Banks Family have

braved the shave and lost
their locks to help support
the Leukaemia Foundation.
After seeing the effects of
cancer through family members and the Bacchus Marsh
Bowling Club, Suzanne,
Jodie and Carissa Banks
decided that shaving their
heads was something they
just needed to do.
Mother of Jodie and Carissa, Suzanne said losing their
locks was a daunting experience but they had no regrets.
We all feel wonderful for it
and we are all very proud of

ourselves, she said.

Carissa and I travelled
to Federation Square mid
March and the Leukaemia
Foundation shaved our
heads. The next day we
went to Jodies house and
had a celebration whilst she
shaved hers.
While Carissa and Jodie
donated their hair to the
Foundation to be made into
wigs, the mother-daughter
trio have so far raised close
to $7000.
Our initial target was to
raise $5000, but we are still
raising money today and
have so far raised nearly

$7000, Ms Banks said.

For those who are interested, I would tell them to
just do it, because you dont
know how beautiful you really feel and Im sure that
those who are sick would
look at us and feel really
inspired. There are so many
people who are effected by
leukaemia and I just wish
they could find a cure but
this is our way to help out.
Since starting in 1998, brave
shavers have raised around
$178 million to help beat

and intersex (GLBTI) community residential estate by
January next year.
The Ballan Linton Estate
already has eight people
in the pre-contract stage
for a place in the 120-house

Dickson said hed partnered
with Cavalier Homes to produce plans for one, two and

Dorothy, Lorraine and Joan
for his parents and aunties.

life without judgement. Regardless of your cultural
background, religion, age or
sexuality, I want Linton to
be seen as a safe haven, Mr
Dickson said.
He said Linton Estate focused on the GLBTI community as they aged, giving
residents another option
that previously had not been
offered in Australia or the
World.
Its important to create
comfortable and safe places
for everyone to age in peace,
he said.
Mr Dickson has set a new
standard when it comes to
residential villages with the
inclusion of many unique

benefits when you become a

member of the Linton Estate

He said people could leave
their homes to someone after they passed away, they
could rent or sublet their
house, they could charge
board, it didnt have to be a
persons principal place of
residence, they could still
work full-time, people didnt
have to be 55 to live in the
estate, there was a guaranteed buy-back scheme, they
could have two pets and if
people needed to move into
a high care facility then they
would still be looked after
by a Linton Estate residential advocate in a Florence
Nightingale program.
The Florence program covers all residents including

live in isolation, Mr Dickson said.

Theyve worked hard and

He said he would also establish a foundation, which
would fundraise to help local organisations including
the Ballan hospital.
When complete, the village
will employ 35 staff, including a full-time manager who
will live onsite.

for Ballan and set the tone
early. Zac Graham, Ben

Snaith chipped away at the
batting order eventually
getting Lucas all out for 193.
In reply Ballan got away to
a good start with the top
four batters combining well
before Zac Graham took
charge smashing the Lucas
attack late in the innings to
finish unbeaten on 92 giving
Ballan a 76 run lead heading
into the second innings.
Lucas second innings started
much the same as their first
with Michael Snaith taking
two wickets in the first four
overs of the 2nd innings and
Zac Graham picking up
two more a few overs later,
putting Ballan in the box
seat. Ben Loughnane cleaned
up the Lucas tail bowling

them out for 118, finishing

with figures of 3/19. With
Ballan only needing 43 for
victory, the final runs were
reached with nine wickets
left giving Ballan a long
awaited premiership victory
and celebrations.
