Cooperative Learning Structures: Flexible Grouping

Strategies
Cooperative learning is an educational approach which aims to
organize classroom activities into academic and social learning
experiences.
Flexible Grouping involves placing students in groups according to: ability
groups, interest groups or mixed-ability.
Arranging students in groups of 4 is ideal when using cooperative
learning structure.
1. Table Group
2. Shoulder Partner
3. Face Partner
4. Think-Pair-Share

5. Numbered Heads
Together

Discussions that occur within the group

(preferably 4).
Your partner is to the right of your
shoulder.
Your partner is the person in front of you.
The teacher announces a topic, states
how long each student will share, and
provides think time.
1. In pairs, partner A gives a response
to the question, partner B listens.
2. Partner B responds with a positive
gambit.
3. Partners switch roles.
1. Students sit in groups of four, each
with a different number.
2. Teacher will give a topic to talk
about or a questions to answer and
gives think time.
3. Students privately write their own
answers (independent time).
4. Students stand up, put heads
together (huddle up), show
answers, discuss, and coach if
necessary.
5. Students sit down when everyone
knows the answer or has something
they can share.
6. Teacher calls a number, that
numbered student from each group
stands, and when called on, the
student answers for his or her team.

6. Gallery Walk

Students walk around the classroom and

observe/reflect on other groups work.
This can also be a good time to
incorporate peer assessment- have
students provide feedback to other

students work by using post-it notes.
