The Summary of Pop Culture
How would you define pop culture? There are various interpretations of what pop
culture. In the article Pop Culture: An Overview by Tim Delaney, he described and answered
any lingering question the people of our society may have had about pop culture. The article
began by Delaney explaining what pop culture is. As the article went on, he then gave examples
of pop culture. Tim Delaney ended his article by explaining the genesis of pop culture. After
explaining the inception of pop culture he closed the article by naming numerous sources of pop
culture.
Delaney stated that there are many ways to define pop culture simply based on whos

defining it. He described pop culture as being our societys patois. In simpler words, Delaney is
saying that it is the everyday language and behavior of our society. Tim Delaney continued to
explain what pop culture was by listing that various aspects that it contains. The aspects which
Delaney listed that could define pop culture were attitude, behaviors, beliefs, customs and tastes.
To conclude his introduction about what pop culture is, the basic definition Tim Delaney used
was that it is the products and forms of expression and identity that are frequently encountered
or widely accepted, commonly liked or approved, and characteristic of a particular society at a
given time.. Now being given a general definition of pop culture from Delaney, he then
went on to give examples of pop culture.
There are numerous genres of pop culture. A few that were listed by Tim Delaney were
music, cyber culture, sports and television being the most influential of society. He then broke
down how our society watches television so much, that it has become difficult to live life without
watching it. We live in a society where we are so influenced by almost everything that happens

on T.V. that without it we wouldnt really have a sense of self. Delaney explained the
frustrations people have with the amount of hours television is being watched. He described that
the people held many television programs responsible for the harmful effect on society. With
there being various examples of pop culture, Delaney made it clear that pop culture was only
broken up into two parts; folk and high culture. If you express folk culture, you will be living
conservative or simple. Folk culture is the regular way of doing things, as Delaney explained.
High culture is was a lot of people in our society today practices. Being described as the social
elite, high culture is more of a sophisticated type of culture. In a generalization, Delaney labeled
pop culture as being looked down. It is looked down on because it is only reflecting or mirroring
what is seen or done every day. Once Delaney gave us a rather clear examples of pop culture, he
then went on to explain the genesis of pop culture.
The three things that played an important role in pop culture are urbanization,
industrialization and of course the mass media. People live in small areas where their living was

uniform. Although it was uniform, the people were often found in cities that had a manifest of
cultural diversity, as Delaney explained. With the manifest of cultural diversity, the people of
these small villages once upon a time, labeled themselves as the reason for popular expression.
Industrialization was important for bringing different models of transportation to the society as
well as the many advancements in developments in technology. Industrialization was the major
key to mass production. Lastly, there was the mass media which had to being the biggest
contribution to the formation of pop culture. Mass media includes films, broadcasts radio and
television. Mass media is also one of the sources of pop culture which Delaney talks about as the
article progresses.
Just like there are many examples and definitions of pp culture, there are numerous
sources of pop culture, Delaney mentioned. As I mentioned in the paragraph above, mass media
is one of the major sources. However there are other sources such as books, radio, film,
television and media. Tim Delaney explained that he believes that pop culture is influenced by
professional spirits that gives information to the public. Surprisingly, a hidden source of pop

culture is individualism. This is a source that is rarely mentions, but it was brought to may
readers attention once Delaney mentioned it. Delaney brought everything to our attention with
this article.
In conclusion, Pop Culture: An Overview by Tim Delaney helped us understand what
pop culture really is. Delaney defined what pop culture is. As the article went on, Delaney then
gave examples to help us get a clear understanding. Once all was understood, Delaney gave us a
history lesson about the formation of pop culture. Tim concluded his articles by listing the
sources of pop culture. In the words of Tim Delaney, Of course, once a unique style becomes
adopted by others, it ceases to remain unique. It becomes, popular..
