The document describes modeling a simply supported beam carrying uniform and point loads in ANSYS to determine deflection and stress distribution. It includes: 1) Modeling a rectangular beam with uniform load of 10kN/m over a 4m span and point load of 20kN using ANSYS software. 2) Applying material properties of steel with Young's modulus of 2e5 MPa and Poisson's ratio of 0.3. 3) Generating contour plots of the beam's deflection and von Mises stress distribution from the ANSYS results and manual calculations.

ASSIGNMENT 2

MODELLING OF SIMPLY SUPPORTED BEAM CARRYING

UNIFORMLY DISTRIBUTED AND POINT LOADS IN ANSYS AND
FINDING DEFLECTION AND STRESS DISTRIBUTION

DONE BY

KARTHICKEYAN E 13M125
BE MECH G1 (SEM 7)

AIM:

To model the simply supported rectangular section beam carrying uniformly distributed
load of 10kN/m for a span of 4m and a point load of 20kN.

To plot the deflection and stress curves

To manually calculate the respective values and to compare with numerical solution.

SOFTWARE USED:

ANSYS Mechanical APDL product launcher 15.0.

MATERIAL PROPERTIES:

Material: steel

Youngs Modulus : 2*105MPa

Poissons ratio: 0.3

PROCEDURE:

Go to programs ANSYS Mechanical APDL product launcher 15.0

Select PREFERENCES and select structural option.

Select PREPROCESSOR Element type Beam 2 Node 188 Add.

Select Material properties Material Models Structural Linear Elastic

Isotropic

Here, enter the values of Youngs Modulus as 2e5 and Poissons ratio 0.3

Select Modeling Create Keypoints in Active CS

A window named Create keypoints in Active Coordinate system is displayed. Then,

provide the required values in that window.

Keypoint 1 is at 0,0,0 and click Apply and for other Keypoints give the value for x as
4,8,10 respectively and Select OK.Hence, four keypoints are created.
Then join those key points by command select lines Active coordinates.

Select Sections Beam Common sections

A window named Beam tool is displayed. In that window provide the sub-type as
rectangular section and then enter the essential dimensions.

Select Meshing Mesh tool. Then change global into lines and click set .
Provide the number of divisions to be created (say 10) and click OK. Lastly, click on
Mesh and pick all.

Select SOLUTION Define loads Apply Structural KeypointsDisplacement.

Again structural force/moment On Key points

Enter the amount of load as 10000 in 2nd node & -96000 in the 3rdnode.

Again structuralpressureon beams.

Select Solve
Hence a dialog box says SOLUTION IS DONE

REPORT GENERATION MODE

Go to results viewer to get the plotted results of deformation and von misses stress
distribution. (use report generation mode , contour plot and image capture option ).
