Paint Calculation: Factor To Consider Are

This document provides information on calculating the theoretical and practical coverage of paint per liter based on factors like dry film thickness, solids by volume, method of application, and wastage. It explains that the actual cost of paint depends on the area it can cover rather than just the cost price per liter. The coverage per liter is calculated using the equation of solids by volume x 10 = sqm/liter / dry film thickness. Then the price per square meter is calculated as cost/liter / theoretical coverage. Adjustments of 10-40% need to be made to the theoretical coverage for practical application based on the method used.

PAINT CALCULATION

Very often the price of paint is judged by its cost price. However, the actual cost incurred could be quite
different for it is material used square meter that determines the real cost.
To arrive at the square meter cost. First of all, we must know the covering capacity per litre.

Factor to consider are:

Dry film thickness (DFT) required.
Solid contents by volume

So the equation for calculating theoretical covering capacity is

Solids by volume x 10 = sqm / litre.

DFT.
Once we determine the coverage the next step is to get price meter square, for which we use the following
equation.
Cost / litre
= price / sqm.
Theoretical covering capacity (sqm / L)

Note:
For converting theoretical in practical coverage, the following should be considered for the approximate
percentage wise deduction used in our calculation depending upon method of application.

1. Brush

- 10% - 15%

2. Roller

- 20% - 30%

3. Spray

- 25% - 40%

The above data account the factors such as wastage, spillage, substrate roughness, painters skills etc.

The above information is given to the best of our knowledge based on laboratory test and practical experience. However, as the paint is often used
under condition beyond our control, we cannot guarantee anything but the quality of the paint itself. We reserve the right to change the given data
without prior notice.
