(1) Consider the Euclidean norm kXk = x21 + + x2n and show that | kXk kY k |
kX Y k for X, Y Rn . Show that the vectors X and Y are orthogonal if and only if

kX + Y k2 = kXk2 + kY k2 .

(2) Let (Xk ) Rn and X Rn . Show that Xk X in Rn if and only if for every Y Rn the
sequence (hXk , Y i) R converges to hX, Y i, that is, hXk , Y i hX, Y i in R.

(3) Let (Xk ) Rn be such that Xk X for some X Rn . Show that the sequence (kXk k) R
converges to kXk. Additionally suppose that X 6= 0 and Xk 6= 0 for all k, and define
Yk := Xk /kXk k and Y := X/kXk. Show that Yk Y.

(4) Let (Xk ) Rn and X, Y Rn . Suppose that Xk X and that hXk , Y i = 0 for all k.
Show that hX, Y i = 0.

(5) Convert from rectangular coordinates (x, y, z) to spherical coordinates (, , ).

(a) (1, 3, 2), (b) (1, 1, 2).
