BASIC GUIDELINE FOR CHAPTER 7: DESIGN FOCUS

As an enhancement to the Thesis Program of UST College of Architecture, we are


introducing the addition of CHAPTER 7 - DESIGN FOCUS in the thesis book.

Rationale:

The Architectural Thesis is a complex research undertaking of fifth year students in the
UST College of Architecture. As such, we take extra efforts to ensure that the students
preparation of their terminal project is given the utmost attention of both the students and
their corresponding thesis advisers. The Design Focus intends to be a supplement to the
basic research of the student. Adding it as another Chapter of the thesis book aims to
emphasize the importance of synergizing Architectural Design as a course with the other
professional courses like Building Technology, Planning, Specialization, among others.
With the Design Focus in place, it will enhance the research further and ensure the clear
delivery of the message of the student regarding the feasibility of his / her research
undertaking.

The Design focus could be:

- Any new architectural material


Example: Curved Heat-Strengthened Glass used as Architectural Panels

- A system of construction
Example: The Application of the Geodesic Dome to Circular Spaces

- Any green technology / building technology


Example: Green Roofing Technology Used in Public Buildings

- Any specialization topic


Example: Heritage Conservation Through Adaptive Reuse
General Outline to be followed:

I. Introduction Devote a page or two describing how you as a researcher have


arrived in choosing a good Design Focus

II. Discussion of the Design Focus Discuss its origin, various applications, case
study of a building using the same design focus, other issues which you think
are essential to understand the design focus better

III. Specific Details - Discuss the details, show diagrams, illustrations and other
particulars which you think are essential to understand the design focus better

IV. Applicability to your Thesis Discuss the specific areas where and how it will be
used in your project

V. Conclusion Conclude the chapter expressing why the said design focus is
essential to your thesis / project
