IALA International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities

1.LATERAL MARKS - indicate the port and starboard hand side of a safe water channel.

Rhythm : ANY ( QF, F , LF , GF) - FL every 3s


Colour : Red & Green

2.Preferred channel mark usually indicate a deep water channel, suitable for commercial
traffic, with a secondary channel suitable for shallower draught vesels.

Rhythm composite group flashin (2+1) every 9s

3.Cardinal Mark used to indicate a position of hazard and the direction of safe water. A
cardinal mark is named after the quadrant in which it is placed. The name of a cardinal mark
indicates that it should be passed to the named side of the mark.
4.ISOLATED DANGER MARKS is erected on, or moored on or above an isolated danger
that has navigable water all around it.

colour white ; Rhythm Fl(2) every 5s.

5.SAFE WATER MARKS indicate navigable water all round the mark.

colour white ; Rhythm long flashing every 6s

6.SPECIAL MARK Indicate a special area or feature, for example : military exercise zone
marks, cable or pipeline marks, spoil ground marks.

7.NEW DANGER marking new wrecks newly discovered hazards not yet indicated in
nauticaldocuments.

colour Blue/Yellow ; Rhythm 1s B + 1s Y , 0,5s interval between them.
