Behavior Plan - Effectiveness
Meredith Lombardo
What was the overall impact?
The overall impact of the behavior plan was positive, even though the students negative
behaviors were not necessarily consistently decreased. Overall, the positive results of this plan
are: (1) a stronger relationship with the student, and greater empathy for him, (2) the student
demonstrated an increased awareness of positive and negative behaviors, (3) the rewards
remained motivating, and the student took ownership of his behavior plan, desiring to earn,
checks each day.
What did you learn about classroom management?
I learned that while most students are well-served by a general classroom/behavior
management plan, some students need extra attention and support, and with time, intentionality,
and planning, that support can be given in an appropriate and productive way. Sometimes, the
original plan does not work as predicted, or stronger motivators or processes are discovered
during the course of the behavior plan. What is important is evaluating the effect the plan is
having on the student, the other students, and the teacher-student relationship.
What did you learn about the student?
I learned that my student longs to be loved. He desires attention and praise for positive
behaviors, and is often very emotional when he receives checks for negative behaviors.
Throughout the process, it was important for me to reinforce my love for this student, especially
when giving him checks for negative behavior.
What will you change regarding classroom management in your future classroom?
In my future classroom, I will focus more on positive behavior management, and on reinforcing
positive behaviors with both intrinsic and extrinsic motivators.
