Identifying criteria for feedback:

Genre

The animation that I created is a short

PG Claymation; this is the main genre,
apart from this there is no other genre
as the clip is far too short to have a
specific genre. The main genre would
be childrens Claymation as this is what
the brief for assignment 3 wanted me
to produce, if the clip was anything
else then I would have failed the unit.
The image to the right shows that it is
a childrens based show, as it is bright and colourful.

Content

The content is VERY limited as there was

only a 30-second window allocated; this
means that I was not able to give a full
story or storyline. The content overall is a
30-second Claymation where the
characters move around the set and
interact with assets on stage. The image
to the right shows the first scene of the
animation showing a piece of the
animation/content including the
characters and one of the backgrounds.

Style

The style of animation is Claymation, apart

from this the only other style is childrens,
this is because there is no content in the
animation that does not fit the PEGI PG age
rating therefore it is suitable for children.
Most Claymation animations look very
similar, especially shorter clips, therefore I
was not able to create a unique style of
Claymation.
The image to the right shows the
Claymation type style to the animation, as
the characters are clay models.

Narrative

The narrative of my Claymation is VERY short; this is fully explained on all

of the dope sheets. The narrative has the characters run around the stage
for thirty seconds while interacting with some assets on stage. This
Claymation would have had a lot more narrative but the brief had
specified a 30 second animation only, by going over this I would have
failed the assignment, and by failing the assignment I would have failed
the unit.

Character

In the Claymation that I produced, there are three characters; these are all
shown throughout the Claymation. I also incorporated a colour co-
ordination system into the animation where there were three houses and
three characters (houses were red, orange and black characters dressed
in red, orange and black). This was to keep the animation looking simple
and to the point. The image shows the characters I have used in this
assignment.

Techniques

The only technique I used in this

Claymation is the stop motion technique
where I took images of the models, moved
them slightly and took more images, and
then I put them in
order and set them
to play at 12
images per second
giving the motion
aspect to the
images. The image to the right is a screen shot from the Flash project, this
shows the timeline and all of the dots represents a key frame with a new
image, these are played at a rate of 12 frames per second.

Technical qualities

The technical qualities include music/audio capabilities, key frames and

classic motion tweens. These are all used in this animation to incorporate
the music and voice into the animation along with the opening and closing
credits. The
image to the right
shows the key
frames (the top
line) and the
audio the
orange line underneath.

Aesthetic qualities

The aesthetic qualities are mainly the stop motion technique the ability
to play similar images at a certain rate in order to make the images look
like motion. This is shown in the image to the right as all of the dots
represent the key frames that I inserted in order to paste all of the images
individually.

Results

I didnt have any discussions with any one however I did get lots of feedback after collecting
in the questionnaires that my peers had written, the results were mainly positive which shows
that the animation is good, an example of this is the graph to the right which is a evaluation
from the 1st question. Does my animation meet the target audience
requirements (5 year olds/PG)? (Yes or no)

Questionnaires

In my questionnaire I written 10 questions out about the Claymation, I

then got 10 people to fill out the questionnaire so that I have an even
amount of answers to put into different graphs and charts. The questions
that I asked were as follows:
Does my animation meet the target audience requirements (5 year
olds/PG)? (Yes or no)
Why?
Does the animation include an intro? (Yes or no)
Does the animation include an outro? (Yes or no)
Does the animation include the CBBC theme/music? (Yes or no)

Do the models look good? (Yes or no)

Unit 33 assignment 4
Ciaran Morton

Is the camera shaky? (Yes or no)

Do you like the characters? (Yes or no)
Do the models work well when animated? (Yes or no)
Is the storyline easy to follow?
These were all answered and I evaluated the results in a separate
document.

Reviews

The reviews I received (the questionnaire results were all good.) This
included all of the questions (e.g. question one - Does my animation meet
the target audience requirements (5 year olds/PG)? (Yes or no) everyone
responded yes).
In the review I created from the questionnaire results, I determined that
100% of people thought that my animation was appropriate for the target
audience, 100% of people agreed that the music and audio was
incorporated into the animation. 80% of people said that the models
looked good, 80% of people said that the camera was not shaky and 80%
of people liked the characters that I had used in the Claymation.

Focus groups

I did not use any focus groups; this is because I got all of the information
that I needed via questionnaires. Focus groups are just another way of
gathering primary data, this would get very similar data to the
questionnaires that I used, the difference is that questionnaires mean that
different people write down their thoughts and I collect the data/thoughts
whereas a focus group is like a meeting where everyone will say what
they think about the animation.

Feedback from online exhibition

I did not use ANY online features when collecting data from the animation,
the ONLY data that I collected was via primary data sources. The only
thing that I did was hand out 10 questionnaires to my peers in order to
Unit 33 assignment 4

collect an even amount of data in order to create different graphs and

charts to see what people thought of the animation. If I were to put the
animation online, I would have to protect it against copying with
copyrights as my clip is a very simple 30-second video I am not going
through the trouble trying to protect it online as is it not worth it.

Showing work to audience

Local screening

As part of the questionnaire process, I put my animation on screen and let

people watch the animation I had created in order to get their input. This
was a kind of local screening as I showed the animation to people in order
to gather data on ways to improve the animation and which parts of the
animation are good/bad.

Action plan

The action plan of showing was to develop the questionnaires I used in

order to gather any data I could get from people who watch my animation,
I could then use the data I collect to analyse the reaction to the animation.
I have already done this and have received many great results from the
questionnaires.

Review software
Unit 33 assignment 4
Ciaran Morton

The software that i used was Adobe Flash; this software

was very good, as I have used the certain version of Flash
a lot previously so I knew exactly how to use the software.
This was also good as Adobe is quite a professional
software that is easy to use; the image to the right is the
Adobe Flash logo.

Key frames

The key frames are

a big part of Flash
auto script 3.0. The
image to the right
shows a section of
the timeline for
some of the animation.
The image above shows the some of the key frames that I have used in
this assignment, each one of these includes an image, these are then
played 12 per second in order to make the animation.
