The following report will illustrate the school counseling services that Hiawatha Elementary has provided during
the 2009-2010 school year. Similar to Washington Local Schools mission to provide students with individual
attention for infinite possibilities, the school counseling department at Hiawatha strives to meet the academic,
career, and personal/social needs of every studentin doing so, students are more prepared to meet the challenges
of the future.

Individual Counseling
Students at Hiawatha Elementary were able to meet one-on-one with their school counselor (Marissa Rex)
to discuss issues that were affecting their academic success. In order to see Mrs. Rex, students filled out
and returned a self-referral form or teachers/parents/other school personnel completed the student referral
form. These forms were available outside of Mrs. Rex's office door and in each classroom.
During sessions, play therapy techniques (i.e. drawing, role-playing, puppetry, etc.) were used as a way to
discuss school counseling goals, as outlined by the American School Counselor Association. This included
helping students reach their academic, personal/social, and career potential.

Small Group Counseling
Another counseling service available to students at Hiawatha Elementary was group counseling. This was
done by grade level and topic, such as making and keeping friends or bullying. These groups and topics
were decided based on a needs assessment completed by classroom teachers and by parent/teacher/school
personnel feedback. In order for a student to participate in small group counseling (usually 5-7 participants),
a permission form had to be signed by his or her parent/guardian. Typically, these groups would take place
during lunch so students would not miss core academic subjects or specialty areas. However, each lesson
was designed around both the Academic Content Standards and American School Counselor Association
standards.
During sessions, play therapy techniques (i.e. drawing, role-playing, puppetry, etc.) were used as a way to
discuss school counseling goals, as outlined by the American School Counselor Association. Also, for older
students, interactive/reflective activities were used (i.e. making books for younger grade levels, interviewing
teachers and staff, etc.).

Classroom Guidance
All students at Hiawatha Elementary had the opportunity to meet their school counselor, Mrs. Rex, during
classroom guidance sessions. These sessions focused on a specific issue that was negatively impacting
learning in the classroom/school and were designed around the Academic Content Standards and
American School Counselor Association standards. Teachers signed-up for classroom guidance units based
on the specific needs of their students.

Summary
This report is designed to highlight some of the school counseling services provided at Hiawatha
Elementary School. This, by no means, is a complete look at the school counselor responsibilities and
overall work load.
Based on the data presented in this report, Hiawatha had a wide range of counseling services available. In
fact, 100% of students worked with Mrs. Rex. Approximately 70% were seen in individual and small
group settings (variance of frequency). The remaining students were seen during classroom lessons.
During the 2010-2011 school year, these numbers should be similar, ensuring that all students have access
to school counseling resources at Hiawatha.
