PROJECT DURATION COLLABORATION

Equipment Semester 8
Gomi is a tool designed for Indian rural girls and women
to aid in their task of collecting cow dung.
It limits direct contact with manure which contains
pathogens.
PROCESS
I wanted to demonstrate that design can do good.
So, I began my research in remote villages of Rajas-
than, India. Immersing myself in rural environment
for weeks while I conducted interviews, experiments
and got involved in their life. I analysed observations I
made and drew insights.
Women in India have been working with cow dung
Primary Research Secondary Research Problem for as long as anyone can remember. It is a system
that is deeply rooted within our society. I challenged it
by going online, researching diferent cultures,
reading scientic reports while navigating stigma and
superstition around it.
I redened my brief; to design a tool that would limit
contamination from pathogens present in cow dung
while making the process ecient.
For a successful design, it had to full three criteria.
Redening Brief Interviews Experiments First simple in terms of manufacture, use and
maintenance. Second, it should have a unique
business and design model. And third afordable for
the consumer.
In the course of design process I went back and forth
between ideation and prototyping. Then taking those
designs to the village and testing it out. With user
feedback I again went to the drawing board to make
changes and repeated this cycle until I got it right.
Above 30 prototypes were made including quick
Ideation Prototypes Market Research paper studies, 3d printed model, metal working
prototypes, concept studies and so on and so forth.
Each model an iteration of its previous one improving
either aesthetics or function.
To make the design accessible and available to all. I
bifurcated the design into two versions for maximum
social impact. An afordable plastic version which you
can buy at any local market and a durable metal
version whose design is open source and can be made
by the local fabricator.

Decor 2 Weeks
Semester 7
Canco was developed as a novelty item for environmentally
and ethically conscious customers of Green the Map. By
upcycling liquor bottles into beautiful containers that can
be used for a variety of storage purposes.
DESIGN GOALS
Green the Map company had three
requirements that had to be met.
Waste Material Home Decor Handmade
To design a product that upcycles waste. To create product in the realm of home decor. To use manufacturing process that are crat and skill based.
DESIGN PROCESS
Concept is to reclaim and repurpose glass bottles
esp. beer, whiskey and other alcoholic liquor
bottles into storage containers. Body of the
container is made from lower portion of glass
bottle and cap is made out of weaved cane. Use of
cane adds additional character to an otherwise
Bottom View niche product. Canco can be sold standalone or as
a part of diverse collection. It can also use as
giting option to package other items like
chocolate, candles etc.
This project was challenging because of dissim-
larity between diferent shapes and sizes of waste
glass bottles. This hurdle was overcome by
building variability right into the design.

Xcess is a wallet for people who commute daily via Rapid
Transport Systems. It gives fast and secure access to
metro card, cash and earphones by attaching itself to
smartphone or wallet.
PROCESS USER JOURNEY TOUCHPOINTS
Ater surveying 256 metro user and
observing 5 metro stations around Delhi for
a period of 2 weeks. Two key observation
were made. First, Delhi metro stations face
heavy trac on daily basis. Due to heavy
footfalls there is longer waiting time at
ticket counters, checking machines and
platforms which is made worse when
people fumble to nd their belongings. In
all this bustle people can lose hold of their
smartcard or smartphone. Second, during
travelling people are mostly engaged on
their smartphones with earphones on.
This is the problem Xcess tried to address. Entering metro station Finding route Buying tickets Ticket checking

As designers we oten approach a
project brief without a clear
material or production method in
mind. In some cases it is only until
the later stages of concept develop-
ment that these crucial factors are
considered. This lack of production
understanding can oten result in
unsuccessful outcomes. In this
project I learned that designing
with knowledge of how an item will
be produced can play an important
role in a successful realisation of a Base Panel Glass Panel

WashD is a bucket for bathing and washing clothes.
It's elevated height, storage space and washboard wall
helps Indian senior citizen to wash their clothes and
bathe without discomfort.
PRESENT SCENARIO PROCESS
As part of health & wellness module, I focused on Indian senior citizens.
Ater following their routine I noticed that they wash their clothes daily
before bathing instead of waiting for machine washing. But washing clothes
with hands becomes increasingly dicult with age. Due to water levels
going down in the bucket as you bathe, there is more back bending.
Changing dirty water also requires immense strength in arms. There are
presently no product in the market which address these issues while being
simple to adapt for everyone, young and old.
