Chapter I
The Problem and Its Background
Introduction
Many students are now working part time on fast food chains or any job
that they can earn money, just to support their finances, simply because some
students families doesnt have enough money to support their children, so it
tends for students to work part time and for them to earn money for their
finances. Working while studying is becoming an increasingly common
phenomenon among students. Students are more aware of financial implications of
entering higher education. A higher percentage of students is now likely to work to
fund their studies, particularly those coming from lower socio economic
backgrounds. But aside from earning money, how does working affect their
school performance? This thesis aims to know how does working for them part
time job affect their level of school performance.
Theoretical Framework
Sanfords Theory of Challenge and Support states that for optimal student
developmental growth in a college environment, challenges they experience
must be met with supports that can sufficiently tolerate the stress of the
challenge itself. Meaning that students must have funds to support their
challenges and tolerate stress by earning money. By doing this, students would
feel much better and challenged when they are seeing money in their hands,
knowing by earning money by themselves theyll be a more responsible student
and efficient, therefore their level of school performance increase, but this
doesnt say that all of the working students are like this, some students may think
that, if they could earn money, why waste time studying? Therefore they will quit
or drop out of school and continue working.
