REFLECTION PAPER DAY 4 2
On November 16th, 2017, my business and society class started the day early and went
straight to the Grand Cayman National Museum and then went on the helicopter tour of Stingray
City. We ended the day short around 1:00 for lunch at Hard Rock Caf and then made up for the
rest of the day by attending the CIIPA presentation by Ms. Vanessa Hansen, and the CIMA
presentation by Ms. Prabhavathi Namburi and Ms. Judiann Myles.
The National Museum was established in 1979, but the building of the National Museum
is the islands oldest known surviving building. It has been used a s a post office, commissioners
office, courthouse, jailhouse, schoolroom, public library, bank, church hall, and dance hall. A
notice board in the yard kept citizens informed of current events. On the existing flagpole, a
lantern was hoisted by night to guide returning ships to safe harbour. It is here, on the front steps
of the Old Courts Building, that many important proclamations were read. The Old Courts
Building holds a special place in Caymanian hearts. So many events of national importance have
taken place here that it has become more than a building--it is a symbol of our National
Heritage (About the Building, 2017). Upon arrival, we watched a short video in the audio-visual
theatre introducing us to the museum and giving us some background information about the
building and island. We then visited the different galleries, which were the cultural history
gallery, the legends of scuba diving gallery, the shaped by the sea gallery and about one more.
After, we walked to the helicopter tours on the waterfront. This was a very thrilling and
amazing experience that I would like to take a loved one on some day. We attended the CIIPA
presentation at the school on November 22nd, 2017. During this presentation went over the basics
of CIIPA, who they are and what they offer. CIIPA is the Cayman Islands Institute of
Professional Accountants. They were first formed in 1970 as a small group Today, they have
more than 1,000 active members and are one of the largest professional societies in the Cayman

Islands. In 2013, CIIPA became an official member of International Federation of Accountants, a
worldwide federation representing the accounting profession. The Society officially became an
Institute in April 2016 during an Extraordinary General Meeting. The change to Cayman Islands
Institute of Professional Accountants reflects the regulatory and educational roles the
organisation plays in furthering the accounting profession and protecting the reputation of the
jurisdiction (CIIPAs Story, 2017).
The second presentation for CIMA gave us some background information about them,
went over all the basics of the company, explained what they do, how they are structured, and
few other things. Ms. Prabhavathi Namburi joined CIMA in 2014 as the Chief Policy and
development officer in the policy and development division. She has a bachelors degree in
commerce, a masters degree in human resources, a bachelors of Law, and pursued the
Professional Practice course at the Cayman Islands Law School. Ms. Namburi is responsible for
conducting research on international regulatory developments relating to financial services, and
developing proposals for regulatory instruments for CIMAs supervisory divisions (The
Navigator, 2014). Public policy is a plan of action undertaken by government officials to
achieve some broad purpose affecting a substantial segment of a nations citizens (Lawrence &
Weber, 2017, p. 137). Ms. Judiann Myles is the Deputy head of the Policy and Development
division. She started working with CIMA in 1999 in the investments and securities division, and
has moved up since. Ms. Myles is an ICCI alumni. She achieved her bachelors in Business
Administration with a concentration in International Finance, and her Masters in Business
Administration. She is also a certified anti-money laundering specialist (CAMS) and is an
Associate Member of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (CIMA, 2017).
