Hazard Communication and Chemical Safety

Reaction Paper

According the one of the reporters, “risk” and “hazard” are two different words
with distinct meanings but often viewed as the same thing. “Hazard” is an agent which
has the potential to cause harm to a vulnerable target, while “risk” is defined as the
probability that exposure to a hazard will lead to a negative consequence. We cannot do
something with the hazards but we can do something to reduce the risks.

The group explained to us that Hazard Communication Standard requires the


development and dissemination of these four: Hazard Classification, Labels, Safety
Data Sheets, and Information and Training.

During the report, the group discussed to us how hazard communication works.
Chemical are shipped to employees by chemical manufacturers. Then, importers will
implement the program and keep information up to date. The steps to an effective
Hazard Communication Program were also enumerated by the group. The first step is
to learn the standard and identify responsible staff. Next is to prepare and implement a
written Hazard Communication Program. Third, we need to ensure containers are
properly labelled. After that, we need to maintain safety data sheets and next is to
inform and train employees. Lastly, we need to evaluate and reassess the program.

In addition to these, Chemical safety is also a crucial thing to keep in mind


because a wide range of chemicals, which may be gases, liquids, powders, or solids
have the potential to harm health when improperly used or handled. Known as
hazardous substances, they may be toxic agents, corrosives, flammables, or reactive. It
may enter the body in a number of ways such as inhalation through the lungs,
absorption form direct contact with the skin or eyes, or ingestion. These are very
dangerous chemicals that is why it is very necessary for everyone to know this such
things to ensure proper handling and of course our safety.
