AHF Installation & Commissioning Report

The harmonic analysis report assessed the harmonic levels on a 500KVA transformer LT side for a customer. The objective was to determine if harmonic levels were within limits prescribed by the TNEB notification. Instrumentation showed harmonic levels were above limits both with and without APFC. It was recommended to install a 60A Active Harmonic Filter rated at 400V to bring harmonic levels within standards. A load and harmonic details table and schematic diagram provided additional information on the system and loads.

Objective of this study:

M/S JL Seagull power products (Distributor for Schaffner Harmonic Filter) studied in Customer name
to assess the Harmonic level on 500KVA transformer LT side. Objective of this study is to assess the
Harmonics level whether the same is within the level prescribed by the notification from TNEB.

TNEB NOTIFICATION DETAILS:

1) Determination of Tariff for Generation and Distribution; Order No. 1 of 2012 dated 30-03-
2012 (Effectivefrom01-04-2012)
2) Ministry of Power (Central Electricity Authority) Notification No: 12/X/STD (CONN)/GM/CEA
(21-Feb-07)

As per the above notification, Harmonics shall be within the limits given below:

CEA Standard –Voltage and Current Harmonics

(1) The total harmonic distortion for voltage at the connection point shall not exceed 5% with no
individual harmonic higher than3%.
(2) The total harmonic distortion for current drawn from the transmission system at the
Connection point shall not exceed 8%.

As specified in the Supply Code, when the consumer fails to provide adequate harmonic suppression
equipment to avoid dumping of harmonics beyond the limits as specified by CEA regulations in to
Licensee’s distribution system, they are liable to pay compensation at 15% of the respective tariff.
As and when the consumer brings down the harmonics within the limit, compensation charges shall
be withdrawn.

Observation: (Refer the charts) Reference at maximum Compensation Current:

 Measured at 500KVA Transformer LT side

 Maximum Compensation Current Required for filter sizing Ref.fig.40 : 63.48A
 RMS Current Ref.fig.37 : 373.8A
 Fundamental Current : 373A
 THDi (Total Current Harmonic Distortion) Ref. fig.39 : 17.02%
 THDv (Total Voltage Harmonic Distortion) Ref. fig.41 : 2.05%

 It is clear from the graph (Ref. fig.39 ) THDi exceeds the permissible limit of IEEE
519&CEA/TNEB norms

Conclusion:

 The Harmonics present in the system exceeds the permissible limits of IEEE 519 &CEA/TNEB*
norm.

 Harmonic filter should be installed at LT side to reduce the Harmonic
