Earth Measurements and Growth Rates

The document provides 4 measurement problems involving calculating: 1) the circumference, surface area, and volume of Earth given its radius; 2) the growth rate of a fast-growing plant; 3) the mass of 1 cubic meter of water and the mass flow rate of draining a large container of water; and 4) the number of atoms in Earth given its mass and the average atomic mass.

Chapter 1 Measurement

1. Earth is approximately a sphere of radius 6.37  106 m. What are

(a) its circumference in kilometers? [4.00  104 km]
(b) its surface area in square kilometers? [5.10  108 km2]
(c) its volume in cubic kilometers? [1.08  1012 km3]

2. The fastest growing plant on record is a Hesperoyucca whipplei that grew 3.7 m in 14 days.
What was its growth rate in micrometers per second?

3. a) Assuming that water has a density of exactly 1 g/cm3 , find the mass of one cubic meter
of water in kilograms. [1000 kg]

b) Suppose that it takes 10.0 h to drain a container of 5700 m3 of water. What is the mass
flow rate in kilograms per second, of water from the container?

4. Earth has a mass of 5.98  1024 kg. The average mass of the atom that make up Earth is
40 u. How many atoms are there in Earth? (1 u = 1.661  10-27 kg)
