A STUDY ABOUT HOW GARDENERS MAKE USE OF
MATHEMATICS IN GARDENING
ABSTRACT
The study intended to know about how gardeners make use of mathematics in gardening. For the
study investigator interviewed 10 gardeners from near by locality. A self designed questionnaire
was used for the study.study stated that almost 90% all the gardeners are in this field with years
experience..70% of them builds and maintain their garden with equal and sufficient spacing between the
plants.Majority amoung them have informal education and completed formal education at high school
level. The highlight is to uplift the importance of mathematics in day to day life of an individual.and also
to be used as an effective tool in school curriculum to help kids to understand the applications of maths in
daily life
INTRODUCTION
The most fascinating of all knowledge and the most phobia generating subject in the school curriculum is
mathematics. The way in which it is introduced to the learners devoid of its daily application has been the
root cause of the present scenario as experienced by everyone in the country. Using gardens to teach
math allowstudents to immerse themselvesin these concepts as they pursue the development and growth
of the garden. We can learn about area as they graph out the plot, planning how many plants they can
grow, how far apart they need to be and measure distance for each variety.Basic geometry will prove
usefull as children contemplate shapes and design of the garden.
Use maths in garden as a curriculum tool to help kids understand how maths is applicable
to life activities.Providing tools such as graph paper, measuring tape and journals for measuring the garden
area and arranging shapes to plan the growing space.Basic counting exercises start with counting the
numbers of seeds planted and counting the number that sprout out.A great exercise is to teach math
through gardening is to estimate the number of seeds inside a fruit and vegetable and then count them.We
can usesubstraction or fractions to examine the difference between the estimate and actual
number.According to seasonal flactuactions ,the variation in growth and sprouting occurs. To estimate the
number of growing plants according with season can be calculated by substraction method.
OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
To study how mathematics is useful to common man in his daily life.
To study role of maths in gardening
To study how maths in gardening is applicable to school curriculum to make easy the subjects.
To find the misteries of maths that lie hidden in our gardens with experiential learning that
highlights geometry and measurement.
METHODOLOGY
Methodology is a way to systematically solve the research problem.
SAMPLE USED:
The sample used for this research is10 garderners from our near locality. The sample technicque
used here is interviewing 10 gardeners about the methods and ways they are adopting in gardening.
TOOL USED:
A self designed questionnaire was used for the study. The questionnaire consist of 10
questions relating to the adoptable measures and procedures used by gardeners in
gardening.Their response are analysed and interpreted in percentage.
DATA ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION
Gardens are a source full of fresh fruits, vegetables, and flowers that provide for and
sustain life. We know a garden, from its creation to harvest, is rich in mathematical concepts and
connections as well. From finding area and perimeter to observing shapes and symmetry,
gardens are truly authentic models of mathematical concepts. As an educator looking for new
ways to teach math or someone interested in the mathematics required to create our own garden,
have reached their right path in their way in gardening.
After the data collected from interviewing of gardeners the study stated that almost 90% all
the gardeners are in this field with years experience.65% of them make use of the panchayat
allowances provided. all are not eligible for getting seedlings from panchayat. They uses natural
fertilizers for nourishment of the culture.80% of them uses Biopests from surroundings are used
for better growth of plants and seedings.70% of them builds and maintain their garden with
equal and sufficient spacing between the plants.
The gardeners make a financial earning from this as they find gardening as a sourcee of
income. They sincerely does the work and doesn’t consider it as a profit earning bussinessThey
plants vegetables along with budded varieties of flowers and climbers to make the garden
beautifull. Gardening maths is the easiest way to understand maths and its application for
children to make ease their subject.
QUESTIONAIRE:
1.For how many years are u in this field ?
2.Do you get any guidance for doing gardening?
3.Are u elible for getting panchayat allowances?
4.How much quantity of biopest do you use after pluffing?
5.In gardening are u able to keep any mathematical shapes ?
6.Are you earning any savings from this?
7. Do you consider this as a profit earning business?
8.Do you include all types of vegetables along with flower plants?
9.Do you use to attend classes provided by krishibhavan regarding various methods and
approaches to be implemented in gardening?
10.Do you use chemical fertilisers and pesticides for nourishment
FINDINGS
From the study its understood that how the gardeners make use of mathematics in
gardening.they uses different shapes in arranging of the garden. They make use of ratios for the
distance sequencing in between the plants.many uses percentages of biopests to be put in
nourishment of garden.so its understood tthat mathematics is an universally accepted science
which is a part of our daily life.
CONCLUSION
Garden math plays an great role in life of children, youngsters and adults. It can be used as an
effective tool in school curriculum to help kids to understand how maths is applicable to life
activities thereby the subject become more easier and interestin to students. Its a great exercise
for children to estimate the number of seeds inside afruit and vegetables and then count
them.Through the gardening activity individuals get understand the vital role of mathematics in
day to day lifeand its importance.
