Middlesex Elementary School
P B ositive ehavior I ntervention S upport Plan
2013-14
MES Goal: Teachers will create, utilize and maintain a classroom behavior management plan, which
correlates with the school-wide PBIS plan. Teachers/assistants will work with students, parents, MES
staff and administrators to provide a safe and orderly learning environment for all students.
Intervention strategies/consequences will consistently be used with students who engage in
inappropriate behaviors in an effort to help students make better choices. Positive reinforcement will
be used to empower our students to strive to “be the best that they can be.”
Classroom Disciplinary Procedures/Guidelines:
Teachers will display PBIS rules/procedures and frequently review them.
A behavior management plan will be written by the teacher at the beginning of the school
year and submitted to the principal for approval. Revised plans may be submitted throughout
the school year. Parents should receive 2 copies of the plan- one to keep at home, and a
signed copy returned to school to file. Parents should be notified of any revisions or changes
to the plan during the year.
Teachers will be given a copy of the Middlesex Elementary School Discipline Plan, which
outlines the leveled behaviors and suggested consequences for each level of offense.
Helpful Hints/Suggestions:
Refrain from scolding or disciplining a child in front of students or other adults. Talk with
them in a private setting or walk over to them and whisper your expectations to them.
Remember to model what you expect from them. Use eye contact or hand signals.
Parent communication is essential in building a relationship that will ensure the success of the
student. Call parents to tell them “good stuff”…not just the “not so good” stuff !! This is good
customer service !!! (DON’T FORGET TO DOCUMENT ALL COMMUNICATION WITH
PARENTS VIA TELEPHONE, E-MAIL OR PERSONAL CONFERENCING.)
Allow students who are not getting along with each other to talk in a private setting, with the
teacher or assistant serving as the mediator. Give them the floor to air their frustrations to
each other. This strategy is beneficial, because they take ownership and work toward solving
their own problems.
Always ask them….. “What can you do to make things better OR what could you have done
differently? Tell me 2 things you are going to change, starting today.” You may want to use
the behavior reflection sheet that is included in this packet with older students.
Most of the time, when students use profanity or disrespectful remarks, it is because they
are accustomed to hearing it in the home. Please refrain from using consequences other
than a verbal warning for the first offense. Talk with them about inappropriate language
and give them a chance to change their vocabulary habits. Role model the proper way to
express feelings. Many times, they do not know that it is unacceptable until we tell them and
show them !!
If they apologize, then have them tell the other person(s) what they are apologizing for.

PLEASE FOLLOW THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURES
WHEN HANDLING DISCIPLINARY ISSUES:
For Level 1 behaviors:
The consequences are to be handled by the classroom teacher.
(See PBIS list –MES Discipline Plan sheet for suggestions)
Teacher should have a system in place to document the behavioral issues.
For Level 2 behaviors:
An immediate verbal correction (privately) should be implemented, as
well as a logical consequence (see PBIS list of suggestions), which should
always include a call to the parent.
In most cases, an administrative referral should not be issued, unless
the parents have been contacted beforehand concerning prior issues.
Documentation of actions and communication is required by the
classroom teacher.
For Level 3 behaviors:These should be referred to the administrator for corrective action
by doing the following:
The teacher/assistant should always contact the principal/assistant
principal before the student is brought to the office- DO NOT SEND
STUDENTS TO THE OFFICE WITHOUT NOTIFICATION.
If a student needs to be removed immediately, then they should be
accompanied to the front office and may wait to see an administrator.
AN E-MAIL (STATING THE FACTS ABOUT THE INFRACTION) IS
REQUIRED FOR DOCUMENTATION PURPOSES for all ADMIN
referrals
Parents will be notified of the consequences by telephone or personal
conference and will receive a paper copy of the referral.
A copy of all referral decisions will be placed in the teacher’s box.
Remember to refrain from talking about student’s individual issues in any public setting.
All behavioral and/or academic issues are strictly confidential.
ALWAYS document when you contact a parent and make notes about the conversation.
DO NOT ASK A PARENT TO COME AND PICK UP THEIR CHILD UNLESS APPROVED
BY ADMINISTRATORS.
Regardless of the circumstances, demonstrate restraint and respect for all students by
disciplining the student in private (away from peers and other adults).
RELATE THEIR ISSUES TO REAL LIFE SCENARIOS. MAKE EACH MOMENT A
TEACHABLE MOMENT. After all , isn’t that our ultimate goal - “ REAL LIFE”
LEARNING FOR “REAL LIFE” LIVING. Help them understand why we have rules and
how it will help them in their everyday lives.
