GEORGE WEIGAND began playing the lute while stud
art and history in the U.S. Before that he had been a
guitarist. After playing the lute for several years with both
university and professional ensembles he came to Britain in
1970 to further his study of the Renaissance. He was
awarded the M.Phil. degree from the University of London
for his research into st

BBC and Independent Radio.
He also directs the Extempore String Ensemble, formed in
1975, which specialises in performing Elizabethan and
Jacobean music for lutes, viols and other stringed instruments
with improvised variations, The Ensemble has performed
extensively and has recorded for both British and West
German Radio. Their first record ‘Consort Music of the
