Learning Objectives: Three Dimensions Explained

The document outlines three dimensions - cognitive, affective, and psycho-motor - for classifying learning objectives from a course. Within each dimension, the objectives are ordered from least to most complex based on typical verbs associated with that level of complexity, such as "describe" and "explain" for the cognitive dimension and "imitate" and "manipulate" for the psycho-motor dimension.

Learning Objectives

To indicate the degree of learning outcome of the course, the learning objectives for the
detailed outline can be classified in the following three “dimensions”:

- C (Cognitive)
- A (Affective)
- P (Psycho-motor)

Within a dimension, they are ordered by increasing complexity (C1 to C6, A1 to A5, and P1
to P5) where the complexity (depth, familiarization) is expressed (following B, Bloom and
others) by a typical verb as follows:

Cognitive dimension of learning objectives:

C1 Knowledge - describe, outline.

C2 Comprehension - explain.
C3 Application - apply, perform, operate.
C4 Analysis - analyze.
C5 Synthesis - synthesize, construct, plan.
C6 Evaluation - assess.

Affective dimension of learning objectives:

A1 Reception; notice - recognize.

A2 Response - respond.
A3 Value - value.
A4 Organization - organize.
A5 Value characterization - accept, appreciate.

Psycho-motor dimension of learning objectives:

P1 Imitation - imitate.
P2 Manipulation - manipulate.
P3 Precision - move, mark.
P4 Co-ordination - co-ordination (operations, menus).
P5 Naturalization - automate, internalize.
