Local servicemen, and one woman, who fought in World War

I will be honoured in a wreath-laying service this Saturday,
as part of the Bacchus Marsh Avenue of Honour’s upcoming
centenary commemoration.
Each wreath, which was created over a two-year period
by the Bacchus Marsh RSL Women’s Auxiliary, features a
collection of knitted poppies, including special white poppies
dedicated to servicewomen, and purple poppies dedicated to
the contribution of animals.
The wreaths will be laid on each tree by a family member,
friend or local school student.
RSL President Cherrison Lawton says the wreaths took “a
couple of years to make”, and the idea originally began as
a knitted collection of 281 single poppies, equating to the
number of servicepeople dedicated on the trees.
Mrs Lawton explained that this idea grew to creating wreaths,
making the number of knitted poppies in the thousands. This
meant more help was needed, and a call-out for knitters from
the Moorabool News and social media, left the Bacchus Marsh
RSL swarmed with eager helpers.
“We had people from far and wide turning up for poppy
patterns!” she said.
Mrs Lawton said she hopes that those who helped knit the
wreaths will be able to see their hard work on display at the
Centenary Commemoration.
Although the Avenue of Honour bares the names of 281
servicemen from the Bacchus Marsh area who served in World
War I, records show there are over double that amount of men
from the local area who fought overseas.
Bacchus Marsh Historical Society Member, Chris Bronchinetti,
said there are roughly 600 men whose names aren’t recognised
on the Avenue, as their families couldn’t afford to have a tree
planted in dedication.
“It was the people with more money that could plant the
trees, so a lot of men didn’t have a tree planted,” she explained.
But just as the trees evolve with the seasons, the memorial
itself will too.
“One of the things we’re hoping to have is a little plaque
acknowledging that there were 400 unnamed trees,” said Mrs
Lawton.
“Hopefully there’s some healing then, to the community,
that we are acknowledging that there were more than the
280 servicemen and one servicewoman who have been
acknowledged on the trees,” she said.
