* Basically, formwork is like any other flat area subjected to
distributed loads, having to transfer them to the base, usually
the ground or a higher floor via articulated (stick-like)
horizontal beams and vertical or inclined shores.
(a) Generic: Built from basic generic components like planks,
beams, and posts of timber, steel etc.
* Require detailed design
of all members & con-
nections from theory, vB
geometrical properties
of cross-sections,
mechanical properties of
materials, and structural
analysis, to satisfy all

| (b) Modular: Put together from standard components such as
tubes/rolled sections of fixed dimensions and shapes.
+ Geometric properties known and tabulated, made of
approved materials of known material properties.
* Connection components also manufactured under strict,
quality control, and
listed capacities to
match manufactured
component sizes and
capacities.
* May involve some
minimal checking to
ensure assembly
does not violate
structural or
regulatory limits.
(c) System: A ready-made collection of members and
connections of various patented ‘proprietary’ designs, with
capacity tables, and assembly instruction manuals, with
which the entire falsework structure can be speedily and
efficiently erected.
+ These do not
involve any design,
and are suitable
for repetitive use
of standard or
fixed complex
configurations.
+ They cannot (must
not) be altered as
needed at site.
