20 mm Sieve Analysis of Coarse Aggregate

The document discusses the results of an experiment on sieve analysis of aggregates. It defines fineness modulus as a figure representing the cumulative percentage retained on a series of sieves, which indicates how coarse an aggregate is. A lower fineness modulus results in more cement paste and easier workability. It also notes that state aggregate specifications limit deleterious materials and some aggregates failing organic impurities tests require further mortar strength testing. Based on the experimental results, the sample aggregate would be used.

EXPERIMENT 1 - SIEVE ANALYSIS OF AGGREGATES:
GUIDE QUESTIONS

1. Define the fineness modulus of aggregate. What is it used for?

Fineness modulus is a single figure which is the sum of cumulative %

retained on a series of sieves having a clear opening half that of the preceding

one. The higher the FM, the coarser the aggregate. Fine aggregate affects many

concrete properties and workability. Usually, a lower FM results in more paste,

making concrete easier to finish.

2. Using the Internet, find the aggregate specifications for your state and identify the

limitations for deleterious materials in aggregates.

According to the Specifications, materials failing the organic impurities

test are to be tested for the effect of organic impurities using the mortar strength

test. The results of the test are the basis for acceptance or rejection of the fine

aggregate.

3. Based on the result of your experiment, are you going to use your sample? Explain.

Yes,
