Research Methodology Overview

This chapter outlines the research methodology used in the study. A correlational research design is employed to describe and predict the relationship between variables without manipulation. Descriptive statistics such as percentages, averages, and box plots will be used to summarize and explore the data. The study will be conducted in Barangay Tambacan, Iligan City, Philippines, which has a population of around 17,616 based on the 2015 census. Fifty residents from various sub-divisions of the barangay will be purposively selected as respondents along with police officers from the local police station.

Chapter 3

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter of the study will show the method used and methodology

of the study. Like the Method Used, Research Environment, Research

Respondents, Research Instrument, Data Gathering Procedure, Scoring

Procedure and Statistical Treatment of the data.

Method Used

A correlational study is a research method that describes and predicts

how variables are naturally related in the real world, without any attempt by the

researcher to alter them or assign causation between them.

Descriptive statistics provide simple summaries about the sample and

about the observations that have been made. Such summaries may be either

quantitative, i.e. summary statistics, or visual, i.e. simple-to-understand graphs.

These summaries may either form the basis of the initial description of the data

as part of a more extensive statistical analysis, or they may be sufficient in and of

themselves for a particular investigation. The percentage summarizes or

describes multiple discrete events. Consider also the grade point average. This

single number describes the general performance of a student across the range

of their course experiences. The use of descriptive and summary statistics has

an extensive history and, indeed, the simple tabulation of populations and of

economic data was the first way the topic of statistics appeared. More recently, a

collection of summarisation techniques has been formulated under the heading

of exploratory data analysis: an example of such a technique is the box plot. In

the business world, descriptive statistics provides a useful summary of many

types of data. For example, investors and brokers may use a historical account of

return behavior by performing empirical and analytical analyses on their

investments in order to make better investing decisions in the future. (William

M.K. 2006)

Research Environment

This study will be conducted at Barangay Tambacan, Iligan City.

Tambacan is one of the 44 barangays of Iligan, a city about 795 kilometres (494

mi) southeast of Manila in the Philippines. It is south of Iligan's central business

district, Barangay Poblacion. Tambacan is bounded by Barangay Poblacion and

Tubod River on the north, Iligan Bay on the west, Barangay Mahayahay and

Tubod River on the east and Barangay Tubod on the south and southwest.

Barangay Tambacan was created on September 5, 1966 by virtue of Resolution

232 series of 1966 which eventually approved as City Ordinance 280. It has a

total land area of about 48.1 hectares (119 acres) and is subdivided into 12

puroks. Its population as determined by the 2015 Census was 17,616. This

represented 5.14% of the total population of Iligan. Accessible from the north

through Barangay Poblacion by the Tambacan Bridge and from the south

through Tubod by the Tambacan Highway, Barangay Tambacan is becoming a

major bypass route from Iligan's main thoroughfares. Fishing is the source of

occupation for most residents not only due to its proximity to the Iligan Bay but

also because Iligan's major dropping point for fish trades from the major fish
ports in Mindanao is located in one of its puroks which is Iligan-LGU's fish

dropping facility called locally as "Bagsakan". The proximity of the fish

marketplace is an advantage for traders residing at the barangay to Iligan's two

major marketplaces which are the Pala-o Supermarket and Iligan's Wet Market,

formerly the Old Public Market. Tambacan has two schools: Tambacan

Elementary School for grades one through six and the Iligan City National High

School (ICNHS) Tambacan Campus, also known as the ICNHS Annex

(Tambacan), which also serves the southern barangays of Iligan. The barangay

is in a low-lying area, and has been affected by flooding in recent years.

Research Respondent

The 50 respondents were purposively selected among residents of

Barangay Tambacan, Iligan City it may selected in different puroks of the said

barangay. And selected Police officer of the Iligan City Police Station 4 for the

assessment of data gathered by the said office.
