Strain Gages and Extensometer

An extensometer is a device used to accurately measure strain by determining changes in the linear dimensions of a sample under load. It works by electronically measuring the extension of a sample, which can then be used to develop a stress-strain curve showing properties like yield strength and modulus of elasticity. Extensometers are necessary because simply measuring crosshead displacement does not isolate the sample's extension and can include deflection from other sources. They allow strain to be calculated directly as change in length over original length. Extensometers are commonly used in biomechanics to measure soft tissues through low-stiffness devices or optical tracking of markers, and hard tissues using typical extensometers.

Dr. Thomas Brown
What is it?

zA device used to determine changes in

linear dimensions
zElectronically measures extension of
sample under load
zFrom load and extensometer data, stress
vs. strain curve can be developed
{Yield, tensile, ultimate strength
{Modulus of elasticity
How does it work?
z The basic principle for a resistance-type
transducer: the resistance of a wire increases
with increasing strain and decreases with
decreasing strain
Why use an extensometer?
zMeasuring crosshead displacement
measures more than wanted
{Machine deflection
{Grip deflection
{Possible slippage and deflection of the part
outside normal reduced area
zStrain=∆L/Lo
{No initial length without extensometer
{Not able to accurately measure change
Use in Biomechanics

z Soft tissues: two main techniques

{low-stiffness biomedical extensometers used for one-
dimensional collagenous structures
{optical methods based on video-extensometers and
video cameras tracking target markers drawn on the
specimen surface used for measuring plane states of
strain on planar tissue membranes
z Hard tissues
{Employ typical extensometers unless sample is
compromised by knife edges of grips
