The father of the modern periodic table is Dmitri
Mendeleev (1834 1907). He arranged the
elements in order of increasing atomic mass
and noticed that elements have similar
properties at regular intervals and these were
arranged in columns.
There were a few errors in this arrangement that were
corrected when chemists arranged the elements in order of
atomic number instead of atomic mass.
Periodic Law states that when the elements are arranged
according to increasing atomic number , elements with
similar properties occur at regular intervals.
Day 06 The Modern Periodic Table
Periods
A period is a horizontal row on the
periodic table. There are 7 periods.
For example, lithium, beryllium,
boron, carbon, nitrogen, oxygen,
fluorine and neon make up period 2.
BR
The trends in the table are largely based on
Diagrams
the arrangement of electrons in their energy
levels. (see figure 2.8 on p. 43)
The number of shells an atom has
correspond to it's period.
(eg. period 2 has two shells)
Electron levels can be seen in
Bohr Rutherford diagrams
(2, 8, 8 & 2 pattern)
(excludes transition metals)
Day 06 The Modern Periodic Table
Groups/Families
A group (or family) is a column in the
periodic table. For example group 1 is made
up of lithium, sodium, potassium, rubidium,
cesium and francium.
Members of the same family have the same number of valence
electons.
Valence electrons are seen easily on Lewis dot diagrams.
Members of the same family have similarchemical and
physical properties. ex. the alkali metals are reactive.

1) See p. 41 in text.
a) Colour and label the following groups on your periodic
table: Main metals, transition metals, inner transition metals,
metalloids, and non metals.
b) Label the following on the table:
all 7 periods, all 18 groups (1 18), alkali metals, alkali earth
metals, halogens, noble gasses.
2) Create a chart showing the groups in the periodic table ,
the number of valence electrons in the group, and the
general properties of that group.
