A Word with Learners
Welcome to the joy of learning. In this booklet we will make an effort to understand the
method to solve the Paper -2 of Kannada Language Examination as a part of Departmental
Examination. Paper -2 is meant for translation.
We have analysed questions that appeared in previous four attempts of the said
examination. We have culled all the questions and put them under respective categories as
they appeared in the papers. In the section for translation of words, we have added more
words of similar nature to give you more examples and practice. We have solved them for
you. These serve as a model. You have to make your own preparation on this basis.
However, drawing from a vast experience of teaching Kannada skills to non-Kannada
officers, some suggestions are given below.
1
Translating of Sentences:
In this section, sometimes some popular sayings are given. While reading such a saying in
Kannada you are likely to recall a saying in English which is similar (if not identical) in
meaning. You can write that. Ex:
1. PÁAiÀÄPÀªÉà PÉʯÁ¸À
Work is worship.
2. DgÉÆÃUÀåªÉà ¨sÁUÀå
Health is wealth.
3. ªÀiË£ÀªÉà §AUÁgÀ.
Silence is gold.
4. £ÁªÉÇAzÀÄ §UÉzÀgÉ zÉʪÀªÇÉ AzÀÄ §UɪÅÀ zÀÄ.
Man proposes God disposes.
Ask your colleagues to get you more such sayings in Kannada. You may find some small
books also which list such sayings. You may collect such saying in English. Get the help of
your colleagues/teacher to get the translations of such sentences and practice.
Often, popular public interest notices are put in several places. You would have seen them
written in Kannada and English in several places. This will help you. Keep noticing them.
Write them down in your collection. Here is an actual example from a question paper.
• You need not translate sentences word-by-word. Translating the meaning into other
languages is important. In the sentence below, the phrase ‘Avoid keeping’ is not
translated as it is; but the meaning is perfectly conveyed in Kannada.
So, one evening when I heard fire engines with loud alarm bells rushing past my
house, I quickly ran out and a few streets away found a large crowd of people but we
could see the fire only from a distance because the police would not allow anyone
near the building on fire.
2
This, one single long complex sentence is broken and
a translated into five smaller/simpler
sentences into Kannada as below:
Under English to Kannada translation of passages, we have dealt with five examples taken
from question papers. Under Kannada to English we have given only three. These would
serve as models. Under the translation of technical words between English and Kannada we
have enlisted the words that appeared in previous four papers; in addition we have added
more such words from the glossary.

granted. This time they may be new.
Writing without mistake; neateat presentation also has marks. You can practice these things,
especially in Kannada language always. Continuous effort from now on to the examination
time would definitely take you to success. And we wish you,

1. I have never seen a house on fire before. So one evening when I heard fire engines with
loud alarm bells rushing past my house, I quickly ran out and a few streets away found a
large crowd of people but we could see the fire only from a distance because the police
would not allow anyone near the building on fire. Three engines were busily engaged in
containing fire. While fire is a blessing in many ways, it can also be a great danger to human
life and property.
2. An exhibition
Exhibition grounds were decorated with bright and colourful lights. Men and women in their
best holiday clothes were moving from corner to corner watching the beauty of all kinds of
stall set up. These stalls were like small shops and they had for show or sale such goods as
cloth. Both ordinary and fancy, household furniture, various types of machinery, musical
instruments and numerous articles for daily use all showing labels ‘Made in India’.
