Zaha Hadid

Zaha Hadid was an influential Iraqi-British architect known for her deconstructivist style. This document discusses two of her early unbuilt projects from the 1980s that showcase her innovative designs: 1. The Internationale Bauausstellung Housing project in Berlin (1986-1993) was an innovative residential development that fused housing, commercial, and social spaces. 2. The Peak Leisure Club in Hong Kong (1982-1983) proposed transforming a rocky site by excavating cliffs and constructing cantilevered horizontal layers to form an artificial topography for apartments, pools, and other amenities suspended above the landscape. Both projects displayed Hadid's interest in non-rectilinear forms, fragmented geometry

ZAHA HADID (1950-2016)

INTRODUCTION: 2

• Iraqi-British architect.
• First woman: Pritzker Prize (2004)
Royal Gold Medal (RIBA)
• Dame by Elizabeth II for services to
architecture (2012).
• Her personal style changed the
perception of architecture.
• She propagated the concept of
Deconstructivism.
• Often compared to Frank Lloyd Wright
for her futuristic designs.
• She defined a radically new approach
to architecture by creating buildings
with multiple perspective points and Dame Zaha Mohammed Hadid
fragmented geometry to evoke the
chaos of modern life.

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY:

"I'm trying to discover - invent, I

suppose -an architecture, and forms
of urban planning, that do something
of the something in a contemporary
way. I started out trying to create
buildings that would sparkle like
isolated jewels; now I want them to
connect, to form a new kind of
landscape, to flow together with
contemporary cities and the lives of
their peoples.“
- Zaha Hadid

WHAT IS 4
DECONSTRUCTIVISM?
• A movement of postmodern
architecture.
• Began in 1980
Spotlight
• Gives the impression of the
fragmentation of the constructed
building.
• Characterized by an absence of
harmony, continuity, or symmetry. Library & Learning
Centre
• Moves away from the supposedly
constricting 'rules' of modernism
such as "form follows function,"
"purity of form," and "truth to
materials.“
• Influenced by the formal
experimentation and geometric
imbalances of Russian
constructivism.

Sheikh Zayed Bridge

FEW IMPORTANT WORKS: 5
Eli & Edythe Broad Art Museum, East Lansing, USA
Date: 2007-2012
Size: 4,200 sq. m
The structure is Hadid-esque in its asymmetrical
dynamism, a magnificent foil for the gothic brick
campus it aims to nudge into the future. Her
multifaceted façade, composed of glass and
stainless-steel ‘pleats’ (at every angle save for 90
degrees) reflects movement from all directions

Bergisel Ski Jump, Innsbruck, Austria

Date: 1999-2002
Size: 90m

At a length of about 90m and a height of

almost 50m the building is a combination of a
tower and a bridge. Structurally it is divided
into the vertical concrete tower and a spatial
steel structure, which integrates the ramp and
the café. Two elevators bring visitors to the
café, 40 m over the peak of the Bergisel
Mountain

BAU-AUSTELLUNG
HOUSING

(IBA Housing)
1. INTERNATIONALE BAU- 7
AUSTELLUNG HOUSING
 LOCATION: Berlin, Germany
 YEAR OF CONSTRUCTION: 1986-
1993
 SIGNIFICANCE : An innovative
solution to the limitations imposed
by both an infill and repair
strategy and stringent building
regulations requiring 5 storeys.
 FUNCTION: Residential
 PLANNING PRINCIPLES: Planning
was based on surrounding
conditions of existing buildings
belonging to different time
periods.
 MATERIALS: Reinforced Cement
Concrete, Anodized sheet metal
8
INTERNATIONALE BAU-AUSTELLUNG
HOUSING
 Incredibly rare example of her early work and
visually catches a sense of that earlier spiky,
deconstructivist look of her many unbuilt projects
at that time.
 Area: 2500 sq. m
 The block is split into two parts on the main
elevation.
 Design fuses both housing and block and corner
tower to amalgamate residential. Commercial
and social program.
 The courtyard elevations at the back are of
more interest.
 The 3 story- block terminates in an 8 story tower
at it’s outer corner.
 Lower floors contain commercial premises, with
standardized dwellings above.
 The roof functions as both garden and children’s
playground.
 The sculpted tower is clad in metal sheets and
houses 3 wedged shaped loft dwellings on each
floor.

THE PEAK
LEISURE CLUB
2. THE PEAK LEISURE CLUB: 12
 LOCATION: Kowloon, Hong Kong
 YEAR OF CONSTRUCTION: Unbuilt
1982-83
 FUNCTION: Resort/ Private Health
Club
 PLANNING PRINCIPLES: Derived
from contours. Hadid proposed
transforming the site by excavating
the rocky hills in order to build
artificial cliffs.
 SIGNIFICANCE: Showed Hadid’s
interest in Russian Constructivism
and Cubism
 FORM & MASSING: Interjecting
cantilevered beams and shard-like
fragments that seem to splinter the
structure into its myriad parts
The painting that inspired

SITE PLAN
14
THE PEAK LEISURE CLUB:

 Zaha proposed a horizontal skyscraper formed by

different layers in order to create a new artificial
topography.
 These layers were as large cantilevered beams that
came from the ground and floated above the site.
 One of the most interesting features of the project is
the recovery of the suprematism proposed by El
Lissiztky.
 The Suprematist geology of the design used various
materials to cut through the landscape rejecting the
traditional principles of organization.
 The superposition of different horizontal layers
progresses by adapting the programs into the
design.
 The open spaces between the beams create
dramatic spaces where Hadid introduces leisure
programs as the swimming pool.
THE PEAK AS PAINTED BY HADID: 15
16
THE PEAK LEISURE CLUB:
 The first and second level contain apartments,
the third layer has a void and the last layer
houses the penthouse.
 There is a 13m void between the building’s
second and penthouse layers.
 Exercise platforms, entrance decks, circulation
area, snack bar and library are made to hover
in this void.
 There are 4 separate penthouse apartments
above the club void.
 The mountain cliff acted as a background for
the suspended leisure and intellectual resources.
 The design was required to be a relief from the
city and at the same time be integrated with
the natural landscape.
 The excavation was proposed at the lowest
point to create a man made polished granite
mountain to house ‘hedonistic activities’.
 The building featured horizontal beams,
balconies and interconnecting corridors above
the subterranean space.
