Antibacterial Effects of Mangosteen Extract

This document outlines a study to determine the antibacterial properties of mangosteen against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The objectives are to find the minimum bactericidal concentration of mangosteen extract against each bacteria and determine if one bacteria is more susceptible. The significance is that infections from these bacteria are increasing and antibiotic resistance is a major health threat, so alternative antibacterial treatments are needed that are also more economical and have fewer side effects than synthetic drugs.

Antibacterial property of Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana) against Staphylococcus

aureus and Escherichia coli

General Objectives

1. To determine the potential antimicrobial effects of mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana)

against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli

Specific Objectives

1. To determine the Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) against both E. coli and S.
aureus

2. To determine the significant difference between the susceptibility of E. coli and S. aureus
against mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana) extract

Significance

The incidence of invasive infections caused by S. aureus and E. coli continues to in-
crease and remains as a major health threat to the public. Also, the development of multiple
drug resistance nowadays challenges the health sector to search for new sources of antibac-
terial substances. The demand for antibacterial medicines escalates and the patients resort to
the use of synthetic drugs which my pose higher risk to their health due to possible side effects.

The results of this study will provide a possible source of alternative and more sufficient
antibacterial drug for the treatment of infectious diseases caused by bacteria, especially E. coli and
S. aureus. Additional information on the pharmacologic significances and health benefits of man-
gosteen can also be explored through this study. Since some generic or branded drugs may be ex-
pensive, this study will also provide information in developing a more economical antibacterial
drug. It may also be a basis of the Department of Health and Department of Agriculture in imple-
menting it as a means of its good benefits in our body and by growing and planting the fruits in
more concentrations not only in Mindanao, but throughout the Philippines.

Consumers could also benefit from this because they digest on this fruit and it will add up
to their knowledge about the good benefits of the fruit towards their system.
