“Our lesson for today is about a much
beloved classic story of all time it is
entitled, THE LITTLE PRINCE.”
(The teacher will present the big book of the
story, “The Little Prince”) The story of THE LITTLE PRINCE
There was once a Little Prince who lived by
himself on a small asteroid called B-612.
His planet is scarcely any larger than any house.
He believed that he should take care of his planet
so he always cleaned his three volcanoes and cut
the baobab trees roots that secretly grew
underground and could split the planet into pieces.
One day a seed mysteriously blossomed and turned
into a flower. The Little Prince had never seen a
flower! “You are so beautiful!” he said, “I am the
only flower in this whole world,” the flower said.
“I’m going to water you and protect you with this
glass globe night!” The Little Prince decided to
call her Rose. He loved her very much and Rose
loved her Little Prince.
They were together all the time but, because Rose
was constantly demanding for the Little Prince’s
attention, he started to doubt about his feelings for
her. The little prince decided it was time for him to
make new friends so he went on a trip around the
Universe leaving Rose behind.
On the first planet the Little Prince found a King
who had lived there on his own for many years.
When he saw the Little Prince he happily said
“Good, good, I have someone to rule now!” So the
king started to order him around and called him his
subject, but the Little Prince was not used to taking
used to taking orders from anyone! Friends do not
give orders anyway so he decided to leave.
The Little Prince continued his journey and on the
next planet he found a man very well dressed. The
vain man said to the Little Prince “Oh, now I have
someone to admire me!” The man dressed in all
sorts of clothes and expected the Little Prince
always to tell him how good he looked! But, after
some time, Little Prince thought “Friendship
should not be based only on compliments.” So he
left.
On the next planet, Little Prince found an old man
with lots of books around him. “What are all those
books about?” Little Prince asked. “I am a
geographer!” said the old man, “I write about the
rivers, the mountains and the desserts! Tell me
about your planet so I can write about it!” Little
Prince started talking about himself, the volcanoes,
the baobab trees and of course, about his Rose.
“How wonderful!” said the Geographer. “But I
can only write about the things that lasts forever,
so I cannot write about you and your Rose!” The
Little Prince had never thought that he or his Rose
was not eternal and he felt sad. The Geographer
had no interest in him and friends do so he left and
traveled to a planet called Earth.
On Earth Little Prince saw flowers “What? Who
are you?” he said. “We are roses!” the flowers
replied. “No you can’t be there’s only one single
rose in the world!” the Little Prince said. The
roses laughed “What do you think we are then?
Huh?” they asked. “But I thought my rose is the
one and only. Now I see it’s just an ordinary rose
like all the others,” he cried. Then he walked away
and met a Fox “Hello” the Fox said. “Who are
you?”, the Little Prince asked. “I see you do not
live here for you would know me”, the Fox
replied.
“I came from a different planet” he said. “Wow!
One of those planets in the sky? That’s so
exciting! But what are you crying about?”
“I thought the Rose in my planet was the one and
only but there are thousands here on earth. I
thought mine is special”, he replied “Can we be
friends?”, he asked the Fox. “Only if you tame
me!” the Fox replied. The Little Prince was
intrigued!
“What does taming mean?” he asked. “It means
to establish ties, to create a bond. In order for us
to be friends we must both be tamed. Learning to
understand someone is being tamed by them”, The
fox said. “Otherwise you are just a little boy to me
like thousands of other little boys and I have no
need of you. And you too have no need for me for
I’m just like any other fox.”
“I’m beginning to understand,” said the Little
Prince. “If you promise to visit me every day at 4
o’clock, I’m beginning to get excited at 3 o’clock.
The instant you come my face will be filled with
joy“
The Little Prince promised to visit the Fox every
day to tame and to be tamed. One day the Fox said
“Now take a look at the roses over the fence. Then
come back and I will tell you a secret,” the Fox
said. The Little Prince went over to the fence and
looked at the hundreds of rose
“You are all so beautiful but you mean nothing to
me, you have not tamed anyone and have not been
tamed yourself. My Rose truly is the one and only,
my Fox is the one and only among all the foxes in
the world! Now I understand” said the Little
Prince.
And he went back to meet the Fox. “Goodbye,” he
said. “Goodbye,” said the Fox. “The secret is very
simple: You must look with your heart and only
then you will see clearly; what is essential is
invisible to the eye. It is the time you have wasted
for your rose that makes your rose so important.
You must not forget it. You have become
responsible, forever, for what you have tamed.
You are responsible for your rose,” the Fox said.
The Little Prince understands so he decided to go
back. Back to his volcanoes and to his baobab
trees. And when the Little Prince saw his Rose, he
hugged her and said “I’m responsible for you, and
I will be with you forever.”
