Design of Pier Well Cap

This document summarizes the design of a well cap at a pier location. It includes: 1) Dimensions and parameters of the well cap, pier, and surrounding area. 2) Calculations of loads, moments, and shear on the well cap under two load cases. 3) Checks showing the well cap design meets code requirements for strength and serviceability. 4) Design of reinforcement at critical sections to resist bending and shear. The governing seismic load case is analyzed in detail to design the well cap reinforcement.

Dia of Pier = 3.50 m

External radius of well = 3.50 m
Internal radius of well = 2.50 m
Thickness of steining wall = 1.00 m
Overall depth of well cap = 1.50 m

Span of well cap is minm of -

(i) c/c distance of well steining = 6.000 m
(i) clear span + deff = 6.377 m
Hence, effective span = 6.000 m

RL at top of well Cap = 90.490 m

HFL = 97.660 m
Assuming load dispersion at an angle of 45 degree upto effective depth of well cap, diameter of dispersion area
= 6.254 m
Area = 30.719 sqm

Weight of water above well cap = 71.70 KN/sqm

Weight of well Cap (considering 15% buoyancy) = 35.25 KN/sqm

Load intensity due to vertical load

Case-I
w = 469.56 KN/sqm

Case-II
w = 477.47 KN/sqm

Moment and shear in well Cap due to applied vertical load:

Bending moment is calculated assuming well cap is partially fixed between steining wall
2
Span moment per metre width = wl / 24 x 0.8
2
Support moment per metre width = wl / 60
Shear in well cap per metre width = w Di / 4
where, Di is inner dia of well.

Case-I
Mspan = 563.47 KN-m/m
Msupport = 281.74 KN-m/m
Shear Force = 586.95 KN/m

Case-II
Mspan = 572.96 KN-m/m
Msupport = 286.48 KN-m/m
Shear Force = 596.84 KN/m

Case-I
MR = 3028.00 KN-m
Mspan = 105.98 KN-m/m
Msupport = 52.99 KN-m/m
d0= = 121.57 KN/sqm
di= = 86.83 KN/sqm
Hence, Shear force= = 128.51 KN/m

Case-II
MR = 22281.00 KN-m
Mspan = 779.84 KN-m/m
Msupport = 389.92 KN-m/m
d0= = 894.53 KN/sqm
di= = 638.94 KN/sqm
Hence, Shear force= = 945.64 KN/m

Summary of BM and SF:

Case-I
Mspan = 669.45 KN-m/m
Msupport = 334.73 KN-m/m
V = 715.46 KN/m

Case-II
Mspan = 1352.80 KN-m/m
Msupport = 676.40 KN-m/m

Siesmic case i.e. case-II governs the design.

Check for siesmic case:

For M-25 Grade Concrete & Fe-415 steel :
m= 10
scbc= 12.50 N/sqmm
sst= 300 N/sqmm
k= 0.294
j= 0.90
Q= 1.65

At Span:
Effective depth required = 905.47 mm
Provide overall depth 1500.00 mm
Hence, effective depth provided =(1500-75-32-32/2) 1377.00 mm > 905.47 mm Hence O.K.
Area of steel required = 3639 sqmm
Diameter of bar provided @ 150 mm c/c= 32 mm
Area of steel provided = 5361.65 sqmm > 3639.00 sqmm Hence O.K.
At Support:
Effective depth provided =(1500-75-25-25/2) 1387.50 mm
Area of steel required = 1805.54 sqmm
Diameter of bar provided @ 150 mm c/c= 25 mm
Area of steel provided = 3272.49 sqmm > 1805.54 sqmm Hence O.K.
