AM-783 Agricultural Machinery Design: "Problem Statement With Conceptual Design"

The document discusses 3 agricultural problems and initial conceptual designs for solutions: 1) Mung bean farmers in Tarlac manually harvest and shell mungbeans, requiring a sheller machine. 2) Mushroom farmers in Nueva Ecija inoculate spawn into bags manually, needing an inoculating machine for uniformity and efficiency. 3) Cashew farmers in Palawan face unspecified issues requiring a solution, though no concept is presented. The students will further develop designs to address these problems.

I. BRAINSTORMING

The members conducted a brain storming activity, considering primary

beneficiaries or people of concern where there are noticeable problems and/or
issues in terms of agricultural mechanization and process development need to
be addressed.

 Tarlac

Camiling is one of the fastest-growing towns of Tarlac when it comes to

income and economy. It is also considered as the richest when it comes to
cultural heritage in the entire province and in the agricultural sector. The
town was excellent in terms of crop production because of the hard work of
the farmers and continuous support of the municipal government. Some of
the commodities cultivated in the town were rice, corn, sweet potato, onion,
papaya fruit and mungbean.

Projects coming from different government sectors contribute and have

a great impact in the development of the municipality specifically in the
sector of agriculture. Such projects include irrigation systems, farm
machineries, livestock and trainings/seminars for the farmers for proper crop
productions and operation and maintenance of agricultural machineries and
irrigation systems.

As part of the growing community, problems begun to arise and the

most affected are the farmers and their families. Those problems were mostly
on the farming activities, crop productions and the market of their produced
crops.

During the conducted interview by the proprietors to the farmers and

the LGU-Department of Agriculture, priority constraints were raise that need
to be evaluated and dealt with. Here are the following problems that are now
facing by the people especially the farmers in terms of farm mechanization,
irrigation and livestock.

 The tractor driven 10-row onion direct seeder introduced by the Philippine
Center for Postharvest Development and Mechanization (PhilMech) of the
Department of Agriculture, is too heavy and large for the onion farmers to
use

 Manual transplanting of onion

 Manual dry seeding for rice
 Uneven distribution of the rice drum seeder that causes missing hills
 Manual operation for sweet potato production from land preparation to
storage
 Machine for processing papaya fruit to give added value
 Manual harvesting and shelling of mungbeans
 Proper scheduling and distribution of water for irrigation by the farmers
and associations
 Uncontrolled crop diseases
 High price of feeds for poultry and piggery
 Low market price of livestock (live weight)

Based from the problems stated during the interview, problems on farm
mechanization should the proprietor solve and must give attention.

 Nueva Ecija - Mushroom Grain Spawn Inoculating Machine

Nueva Ecija is one of the producers of oyster and straw mushroom in

the country. In fact, the Central Luzon State University had a Mushroom
Center for technology development, research and extension on tropical
mushroom production and processing, and byproduct utilization for
sustainable development.

II. PROBLEM STATEMENT WITH CONCEPTUAL DESIGN

At the brainstorming activity, the members started their eyeing for farmers in
three different provinces as they are the primary people of concern on the
technology or process to be developed. The members came up with three major
problems and initially identified design concept of the machine needed.

1. Mung Bean Sheller

During the conducted interview by the proprietors to the farmers and

the LGU-Department of Agriculture, priority constraints were raise that
need to be evaluated and dealt with. One of the major problem that are
now facing by the people especially the farmers in terms of farm
mechanization is the manual harvesting and shelling of mungbeans.

2. Mushroom Grain Spawn Inoculating Machine

The absence of inoculating machine of a mushroom grain spawn was

observed during the production process of mushroom fruiting bags at
Mushroom Center, Central Luzon State University.

However, inoculating machines already exists in the world market but it is

not suitable for local practice of mushroom production in the Philippines.

Manual inoculations of mushroom grain spawn are intensive works thus it

causes muscle pain to the laborers, and consumes much time before incubation.
A mushroom grower needs to employ 2 laborers to inoculate mushroom grain
spawn in 3 hours. Mushroom grain spawns are also not uniformly inoculated to
fruiting bags because laborers do not use measuring devices other than purely
estimation
