Affordable DIY Battery-Powered Air Cooler

This document summarizes a student project to create an improvised battery-powered air cooler. The students gathered common materials like styrofoam, CPU fans, copper wires, a motorcycle battery, ice, and a switch. They constructed the device by cutting holes in the styrofoam for the fans and wires. They attached the fans, connected the wires and battery, and added a switch. Testing showed that the device lowered the temperature over time. The students concluded that the device successfully cooled a small area, though the battery life could be improved. They recommended adding more batteries and ice for longer use, and conducting more research to develop a more resourceful design.

Abstract

As time passes by, our generation also evolves and so as our minds and we look for
ways to find our happiness and comfort. So, we created an improvised battery powered aircon
that is more affordable than the aircon that costs thousands of money.
Improvised battery powered aircon is what we chose as an innovation due to the
problem which was experienced by most people especially during the summer season: The
high temperature. It is our time to produce one which is at low cost, efficient, and can be
built easily using scrap materials that are found at home. It is simple because people cannot
buy an aircon due to its cost. The highlight of this innovation which is the improvised
battery-powered air-cooler is how most of the materials that we used are recycled and are not
needed anymore in our homes. Our invention which is the Improvised Battery-Powered
Aircon is the key to our problem that will provide both comfort and storage for our beverages.
Also the researchers made the investigatory project to further improve the life r lifestyle of
lower class peoples.

Introduction
Improvised battery powered air conditioner is an improvised aircon that can be used
by people and this innovation is made out of Styrofoam and other materials that can be found
only in our house (that are not needed or not being used).

Related Literature
According to John OM. Brockis et. Al. stated in their blog that electrochemical
reaction, any process either caused or accompanied by the passage f an electric current and
involving in most cases the transfer of electrons between two substances. The inventors
incorporated fan blades onto electric motors or by simply using electricity the make motor
turn. Electrochemical reaction occurs in every electrical machine.

Methodology

A. Gathering of the Materials

The materials that we used are easy to find in our homes but the other materials are
needed to buy from the store or the hardware; In total half or 1/2 of the materials can be
found on our homes.

Table 1: Shows the Quantity / Quality and the cost of the Materials used

Materials Quantity / Quantities Cost (in PHP) / Found at

home
Compartment (Styrofoam) 1 150.00
CPU Fan 2 200.00
Ice 3 Found at home
Copper Wires 1 meters Found at home
Motorcycle Battery 1 Found at home
Switch 1 50.00
Glue Stick 2 Found at home
Glue Gun 1 Found at home

The materials that we used are the following:

1. Compartment (Styrofoam)
2. Cooling fans (Blower / CPU Blower Fan / CPU Fan)
3. Ice
4. Copper Wires
5. Battery
6. Switch
7. Glue stick
8. Glue gun

B. A). Steps and procedures

First we cut the Styrofoam ice box and made two square holes for the two CPU Fan,
one small hole for the wires, and other quadrilaterals for the air to enter the box. Second, we
attached the cooling fans. Third we fixed the wires from positive to positive and negative to
negative. Fourth, we added the switch on the positive wire (Red / Yellow). Next, add the
Crocodile Clips to the wires. Clip the Crocodile Clips on the motorcycle battery from positive
to positive and negative to negative and turn ON the switch.
B.) Step-by-step procedure
1. Collect all the materials needed.
2. Make holes on the Styrofoam ice box and make holes for the CPU Fans and for
the air to enter the box.
3. Attach the cooling fans.
4. Fix the copper wires, crocodile clips, and the switch.
5. Add the ice.
6. Close/cover the box.
7. Turn on the switch.

Testing
Figure 1 shows the temperature and time how it took the place to coo. The place
measures 2.54 meters in height and 3.06 in length. The temperature of the place we tested is
33 degrees Celsius. We use only three (3) pieces of ice or yelo in each testing.

Results and Discussions
Our innovation which is, Improvised Battery-Powered Aircon is successful because
our innovation made it to cool a place and the battery can supply electricity to a three (3)
small CPU fans. We made this innovation because other people cannot buy an aircon because
it cost thousands of money. This innovation will help people because the materials that we
used can easily be found at home and can be bought easily; we tested our innovation so we
will know if it is effective and working properly. You saw the effectiveness of our innovation
on the Figure 1; Figure 1 concludes that this innovation is effective and working. You will
also saw in Figure 1 that the dependent variable which is the temperature decreases when
time passed because of the innovation. How our innovation works? Simple, because of the ice
inside the compartment (Styrofoam) and also the CPU fan, when the cold water vapor comes
up the CPU fans is the responsible of blowing it out from the compartment (Styrofoam) then
goes through the bottles (tubes) and then a cool air will come out that’s how our innovation
work.

Conclusion
Therefore the researchers conclude that the Improvised Battery-Powered Aircon is
(Successful or not), efficient and safe. The only problem of the innovation is the battery or
the battery source because if the battery is empty the innovation will not work.
Recommendation
In order to improve the innovation’s quality, the following were recommended:
First buy one or two more batteries and ice for more fun while using the innovation. Second,
find other better ways to improve the effectiveness of the product. These recommendations
will improve the quality while using the innovation. Lastly, conduct more and continuous
research in developing a resourceful and affordable aircon.
