CHAPTER II

INTERNSHIP LOCATION OVERVIEW

PT. Pertamina (Persero) Marketing Operation Region III

2.1. Company History

a. Company Growth
Currently, petroleum is still the main commodity in Indonesia, both as a source of
energy and as a base for derivative products to meet the needs of the community. The process
of processing petroleum into products with high economic value is the main objective of
companies engaged in exploration to the downstream petrochemical industry. The management
of these resources is regulated by the state for the prosperity of the people as stipulated in the
UUD RI 1945 article 33 paragraph 3. This is intended to avoid monopolistic practices and the
misuse of natural resources.
Oil drilling business in Indonesia was first carried out by Jan Raerink in 1871 at Cibodas
near Majalengka (West Java), but the business failed. Then it was continued by Aeilo Jan
Zykler who drilled in Telaga Tiga (North Sumatra) and on June 15, 1885, the first commercial
oil source was discovered in Indonesia. Since then, successively found petroleum sources in
Kruka (East Java) in 1887, Ledok Cepu (Central Java) in 1901, Pamusian Tarakan in 1905 and
in Talang Akar Pendopo (South Sumatra) in 1921. Findings from other oil producers encourage
the desire of foreign companies such as the Royal Deutsche Company, Shell, Stanvac, Caltex
and other companies to participate in the oil drilling business in Indonesia.
After Indonesian independence, there were several changes to the management of oil
companies in Indonesia. On December 10, 1957, at the behest of Major General Dr. Ibnu
Soetowo, PT EMTSU was changed to PT Perusahaan Minyak Nasional (PT Permina). Then
with PP No. 198/1961 PT Permina was merged into PN Permina. On August 20, 1968 based
on PP No. 27/1968, PN Permina and PN Pertamina were merged into a company called the
Perusahaan Pertambangan Minyak dan Gas Bumi Negara (PN Pertamina). As a new working
foundation, Act No. 8/1971 was issued on September 15, 1971. Since then, the name of PN
Pertamina has been changed to PT. Pertamina, and with PP No. 31/2003 PT. Pertamina
becomes (Persero), which is the only national oil company authorized to manage all forms of
oil industry activities in Indonesia.

4. Expanding new market to accelerate business of the Directorate of GEBT in Gas,
Power, and NRE sectors
Developing resources and new business as new growth engine.

c. Development of PT. Pertamina (Persero) Marketing Operation Region III

In the long history of the Indonesian petroleum industry, it was stated that during the
Dutch East Indies period, the task of supplying and marketing fuel was carried out by oil
companies BPM and Stanvac.
Pertamina is an oil and gas company owned by the Government of Indonesia (National
Oil Company), which was established on December 10, 1957 under the name of PT Permina.
In 1961 PN Permina was formed which had a very strong domestic organization in the
downstream sector, especially in the field of marketing so that, in 1964, PN Permina was given

7
the responsibility of the Government to manage domestic oil distribution and after the merger
with the PN. Pertamina.
Based on the Regulation of the Government of the Republic of Indonesia No.27 / 1968,
the National State Oil and Gas Mining Company (PN Pertamina) was formed as a result of the
merger of the PN. Pertamina, which is engaged in oil exploitation with the PN. Pertamina. With
the passage of Act No. 8 of 1971, the name of the company became Pertamina. This title is still
used after Pertamina changed its legal status to PT. Pertamina (Persero) on September 17, 2003
based on the Act of the Republic of Indonesia Number 22 of 2001 on November 23, 2001
concerning Oil and Natural Gas.
To simplify the distribution of Oil and Gas Fuel and its processed products throughout
the country, in the downstream sector at that time, it was formed the Marketing Region III
which is under the auspices of the Domestic Marketing Directorate and led by the Head of
Region.
The Marketing Region III was originally located at Jl. Matraman Raya by using the
office previously occupied by PN. Pertamina. Its role is in the field of supply and service of oil
and natural gas, marketing of oil and gas products, petrochemical products and other products
in the Jakarta and West Java regions.
In 1970, the Regional Marketing Office III moved to Jl. Juanda No. 13 Jakarta and in
1974 moved again to Jl. Kramat Raya 29 Central Jakarta. The Marketing Region III in 1977
underwent a change of name to Marketing Unit III and in 1987 it changed again to become the
Unit Pembakalan dan Pemasaran Dalam Negerit III (UPPDN III) headed by a Unit Leader. The
transfer of UPPDN III head office was carried out again in 1986 by occupying a new building
at Jl. Kramat Raya 59, Central Jakarta which is used today. In 2001, the name UPPDN III was
changed back to Marketing Unit III (UPMS III) headed by the General Manager. With the
issuance of the Regional Autonomy Law which resulted in the splitting of West Java Province
in 2001, the formation of Banten became a province, increasing the scope of the Marketing
Unit III working area, besides the Special Capital Region of Jakarta and West Java.
