Self Esteem

By Matt Van Roeyen

Presentation
Introduction: Matthew Van Roeyen/ Self Esteem

Why I chose this topic:I chose this topic, because it’s something I’m currently working on.

Objectives:Learn the definition of Self Esteem. Find out what the pros, and cons, are to
both negative, and positive, comments. Discover why Self Esteem is important.

Materials Needed:Handouts, pencil.

Activity: Compare papers, Think About Concepts, Watch videos, Play Quizizz.

Procedure:Look at both papers you are given, and understand the difference between them
both. Watch the videos in this presentation, and understand what characters in each video
have self esteem. Play a Quizizz game on self esteem.
What is Self Esteem?
The first paper has exactly one sentence. Pretend that you
say this sentence about yourself. How does it make you
feel?

The second paper has ten sentences. Pretend that you say
these sentences about yourself. How does that make you
feel?

ACTIVITY: On the back of either of these papers, write your

own definition of self esteem.
What is Self Esteem?
Let’s break apart the words. “Abraham Maslow was an American professor of psychology who
created Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. He stressed the importance of focusing on the
positive qualities in people, instead of treating them like a bag of symptoms.”

“Esteem needs refer to the need for respect, self-esteem, and self-confidence. Esteem needs
are the basis for the human desire we all have to be accepted and valued by others”.

So, “esteem” is about being accepted. Now, put the word “self” in front of the word
“esteem”.

What does that mean?

Who Has Self Esteem?
Watch the video, and find out who has self esteem.

If you feel positive, or negative, about yourself, what kind

of self esteem do you have?
Low And High Self Esteem
“People with high self-esteem are realistic about their strengths and weaknesses and are
able to set goals and work toward them with optimism and humor. They also feel competent in
areas they consider important and do not take other people's negative impressions of them
too seriously.”
([Link]

“People with low self-esteem have a hard time honestly evaluating their strengths and
weaknesses and often have an unrealistic, overall negative impression of themselves. They
take other people's opinions of their strengths and weaknesses more seriously than they
should. Also, they do not feel competent in areas they consider important. People with low
self-esteem tend to be pessimistic.”

Are people with low self esteem happy?

Do people with low self esteem spend more time alone?

Do people with low self esteem complain and criticize?

Do people with low self esteem worry about everything?

What about people with high self esteem...?

About Me
Take a moment to think about the About Me form. Why are
these things important to think about? What do they help
you understand?

Beauty
Take a moment to consider what makes you beautiful… Why is
this important? What does feeling good about your own body
do for your self esteem?

Self Esteem Scale
“The original sample for
which the scale was
developed in the 1960s
consisted of 5,024 high
school juniors and seniors
from 10 randomly selected
schools in New York State
and was scored as a Guttman
scale. The scale generally
has high reliability.”

No Put Downs
“Every teacher wants their classroom to
be a happy, safe, and enjoyable place.
By establishing your classroom as a ‘No
Put Down Zone’ you are creating a
positive learning environment for all of
your students. By displaying this poster
in your classroom you are providing your
students with a visual reminder that in
your classroom they are free to learn
without having someone laugh or make fun
of them”

Closure/Assessment: What is good enough? Is
giving enough, the bare minimum, good
enough? Is putting forth all of your effort
towards a goal good enough? How does that
tie in with self esteem? Why is self esteem
important? Does putting forth all of your effort
towards anything give you positive, or negative,
self esteem? If you put forth all of your effort
towards anything, and you look back on what
you have done, even if you didn’t succeed or
didn’t get to where you wanted to be, what kind
of self esteem do you develop? Why is that
important?
