Reflection on Principle of Art: Proportion
During the 2019 Intramurals of Bukidnon State University (BukSU), we, the
students of the subject; Art Appreciation were tasked by Mr. Rhondell Paraiso to sight the
principles or elements of art may be present at the event.
I was tasked to feature the principle of art which is proportion. Proportion is defined
as the principles that deals with how the elements present in the subject was arrange in
an aesthetical pleasing way to emphasize the relative relationship of one part is to the
second part as the second is to the whole. This make me realize how important
proportions is on making art harmonious in sight.
The event lasted in 5 days with several activities, enough for me to look for this
principle. Everyone was busy at the moment, and I am looking at them trying to find any
actions or figure that may show proportion. Thereafter I had perceived this principle of art
from the picture I took of the newly crowned Mr. and Ms. BukSU 2019 [Link] Basinga
and Mister Joseph Alexander Quimpo. I paused for a minute to actually realize how our
body and face shows proportion after just staring at them. It serves to me as a baseline
to judge their faces. The face was actually taller than its wide while it was shaped
approximately symmetric around vertical axis. The eyes divides the head horizontally
through the center, and the nose just falls between the “eye line” and the bottom of the
chin. And the mouth is closer to the nose than the bottom of the chin. The average
proportion will be the space between the eyes is as far apart as one eye is wide. The
nose is as wide as or slightly wider than the space between the eyes and the mouth is as
wide as the center of the eye is as wide. That relationship of every part of faces makes it
more proportional to me.
That particular moment where I stood and stare at them I was truly amazed how
our face are greatly shaped to look good. It lets me realize how exact does our face was
created to resemble the masterpiece of our creator.
Knowing how proportion shows equilibrium to elements that please us visually it
was really mesmerizing. I was actually stunned that let me pause for a while. How
proportion applies to human face. Most of the artists found this principle significant on
making the reflection of human face through their artworks perfect. Just like the statue of
Michaelangelo “David” was an ancient Greek model that portrays an excellent illustration
of both scale and proportion. On the statue the mathematical system which is meant to
define the perfection in the human body was achieved.
It may be awful to say, that some people might have lesser proportioned face. But
for artist gorgeous are defined on how their faces are greatly proportioned that let them
define them perfect and pleasing in sight. My observation upon proportions at the faces
of our newly crowned king and queen doesn’t mean that their faces was perfect, it only
means that the parts on their faces relates to one another that makes it more beautiful in
sight. The visual art department chair of Public arts magnet school Mr. Ashley hurst at his
article in the website [Link] said that being familiar with the average
proportions of the human face is beneficial for two reasons. First reason is to help prevent
artist from making major mistake when working from imagination. Second, the average
proportion of acts as the baseline in judging individuals and capturing a likeness. For
artist, perfect lies in their hands and imagination while for human face, if proportions is
not meant, it might not be as beautiful to most.
Our Mr. and Ms. BukSU 2019 being the subject of my observation, their faces are
of great proportion. And I had judged them just according to this principle. They are not
artworks, therefore they are not a result of man’s endeavor of expression that precedes
expression. But they just fit into the principle that I am searching for. Aside from this mere
fact, after a long sacrifices and hardships for the crown this reputation makes them more
appealing to everyone
If I were to see a sculpture, a painting, a drawing or any work of art again, I will
definitely become aware of this principle. Especially if they use this to emphasize a certain
meaning or to convey a message. But I cannot use this principle in judging human faces
anymore. Billions of people are being born unique, you cannot judge if they are born
perfect or not. Every appearance resembles a lot that makes it different to one another
and it cannot be rated according to whose very beautiful or not. Because art is way too
different to what nature is.
