Design Mix Calculation

The document outlines the step-by-step process for designing a concrete mix with a target compressive strength of 25 MPa at 28 days using materials with known properties. It involves determining the target mean strength, selecting a water-cement ratio of 0.45, calculating water and cement contents, estimating coarse aggregate proportion, and determining the final mix proportions of cement, water, fine aggregate, and coarse aggregate to achieve the design strength. The key steps are to first select a water-cement ratio of 0.45, then calculate cement, water, and coarse aggregate contents before estimating fine aggregate quantity to achieve the proper mix design.

DESIGN MIX CALCULATION

Data Required for Concrete Mix Design:

1. Concrete Mix Design Stipulation

Characteristic compressive strength required in the field at 28 days = M25

Nominal maximum size of aggregate = 20 mm

Shape of Coarse Aggregate = Angular

Degree of workability required at site = 50-75 mm (slump)

Type of exposure the structure will be subjected to (as defined in IS: 456) =
Moderate

Type of cement: PPC

2. Test data of material (determined in the lab)

Specific gravity of cement = 2.90

Specific gravity of FA = 2.28

Specific gravity of CA = 2.43

Aggregate are assumed to be in saturated surface dry condition.

Fine aggregates confirm to Zone II of IS – 383

Procedure for Concrete Mix Design of M25 Concrete:

Step 1 — Determination of Target Strength:

Ft = Fck + 1.65 × S

Ft = Target mean strength

S = Standard deviation in N/mm2 = 4 (as per table -1 of IS 10262- 2009)

Fck = Characteristics strength at 28 days in N/mm2 = 25

= 25+1.65×4

Ft = 31.6N/mm2

Step 2 — Selection of water / cement ratio: -

Free water-cement ratio required for target mean strength of 31.6 N/mm2 is 0.45

Maximum water-cement ratio for Moderate exposure condition = 0.6

So, take water-cement ratio = 0.45

Step 3 — Selection of Water Content: -

Maximum water content for 20 mm aggregate = 186 liter (for 25-50 mm slump)

For every increase in 25 mm slump the water content is increased by 3% so for

50-75 mm slump the water content will be_

𝟑
𝟏𝟖𝟔 + 𝟏𝟖𝟔 ×
𝟏𝟎𝟎

= 𝟏𝟗𝟏. 𝟔 𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒆𝒓

Step 4 — Selection of Cement Content: -

Water-cement ratio = 0.45

Water content W = 191.6kg/m3

Cement content C =?
𝑾
= 0.45
𝑪

𝟏𝟗𝟏. 𝟔
=𝑪
𝟎. 𝟒𝟓

C = 425.7 kg/m3

Minimum cement Content for moderate exposure condition = 300 kg/m3

Maximum cement content = 450 kg/m3

So, Cement content = 425.7 kg/m3

Step 5 — Estimation of Coarse Aggregate proportion: -

From Table 3 of IS 10262- 2009,

For every ± 0.05 change in w/c, the coarse aggregate proportion is to be

changed by 0.01. If the w/c is less than 0.5 (standard value), volume of coarse
aggregate is required to be increased to reduce the fine aggregate content.

For nominal maximum size of aggregate = 20 mm,

For zone of fine aggregate = Zone II

And For w/c = 0.45

Volume of coarse aggregate per unit volume of total aggregate = 0.63

So, Volume of fine aggregate = 1 – 0.63 = 0.37

Step 6 — Estimation of the mix ingredients: -

a) Volume of concrete = 1 m3

𝑀𝑎𝑠𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑐𝑒𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡 1
b) Volume of cement = x
𝑆𝑝𝑒𝑐𝑖𝑓𝑖𝑐 𝑔𝑟𝑎𝑣𝑖𝑡𝑦 𝑜𝑓 𝑐𝑒𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡 1000

425.7 1
=
2.90
× 1000

=0.146m3

𝑀𝑎𝑠𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑤𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟 1
c) Volume of water = ×
𝑆𝑝𝑒𝑐𝑖𝑓𝑖𝑐 𝑔𝑟𝑎𝑣𝑖𝑡𝑦 𝑜𝑓 𝑤𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟 1000

191.6 1
×
1 1000
=0.1916 m3
d) Volume of total aggregates = a – (b + c)
= 1 – (0.146 + 0.1916)
= 0.6624 m3

e) Mass of coarse aggregates = d × volume of coarse aggregate × specific-

gravity of coarse aggregate × 1000

= 0.6624 x 0.63 x 2.43 x 1000

= 1014.06 kg

f) Mass of fine aggregates = d × volume of fine aggregate × specific gravity of

fine aggregate × 1000

= 0.6624 x 0.37 x 2.28 x 1000

= 558.80 kg

Proportion of total mix:

Cement = 425.7 kg/m3

Water = 191.6 kg/m3

Fine Aggregate = 558.8 kg/m3

Coarse aggregate = 1014.06 kg/m3

Water-Cement ratio = 0.45
