Soil Density and Compaction Calculations

This document provides 10 practice problems related to soil mechanics formulas for calculating: 1) The volume of borrow material required to construct a road based on given dry and wet densities and moisture contents. 2) Void ratio, moisture content, saturated unit weight, mass of water required for 80% saturation, and volume of solids for a soil sample with given dry unit weight, moisture content, and specific gravity. 3) Dry unit weight, degree of saturation, and air content for a compacted embankment with given bulk unit weight, water content, and specific gravity. 4) Whether a soil can be compacted to a given dry unit weight and moisture content.

GTE – Assignment III

Useful formulae

Note: Volume of solids must be constant if the borrow pit soil in a construction
site or on earth dam or anywhere else is used.
1) A borrow materials with an in-situ dry density of 16 kN/m3 is used in road
earth work to be finished with a wet density of 20 kN/m3 at a moisture
content of 18%. Make an estimate of the volume of borrow materials
required for a finished road earth work of 1000 m3 volume.

2) If a soil sample has a dry unit weight of 19.5 KN/m3 , moisture content of 8%
and a specific gravity of solids particles is 2.67. Calculate the following:

a) The void ratio.

b) Moisture and saturated unit weight.

c) The mass of water to be added to cubic meter of soil to reach 80%

saturation.

d) The volume of solids particles when the mass of water is 25 grams for
saturation

3) Soil has been compacted in an embankment at a bulk unit weight of 2.15 t/m3
And water content of 12% , the solid particles of soil having specific gravity of
2.65.

a) Calculate the dry unit weight, degree of saturation, and air content.

b) Would it possible to compact the above soil at a water content of 13.5% to

a dry unit weight of 2 t/m3.

4) An earth dam require one hundred cubic meter of soil compacted with

unit weight of 20.5 KN/m3 and moisture content of 8%, choose two from
the borrow pit, the specific gravity of solid particles is 2.7.

5) A layer of sand 5 meters deep overlies a thick bed of clay. Draw diagrams

indicating the total and effective stresses and pore water pressure on
horizontal planes to a depth of 9 meters below the ground surface in the
following cases:

a. If the water table is at the ground level.

b. If the water table is at 2 meters below ground level and the sand above
remains saturated with capillary moisture.

c. If the water table is at the top of the clay and the sand dry.

For Sand: Sat. Unit wt is 20.9kN/m3 Dry. Unit wt is 17.6kN/m3

For clay Sat. Unit wt is 17.8 kN/m3

6) In a CU triaxial test, a soil sample was consolidated at a cell pressure of

200kN/m2 and a back pressure of 100kN/m2 for 24 hours. On the next day,
the cell pressure was increased to 300kN/m2 . This resulted in the
development of a pore pressure,of 80kN/m2 . The axial stress was then
gradually increased to 400kN/m2 , which resulted in a failure of the soil.
The pore pressure recorded at failure was 50kN/m2 . Determine
Skempton's pore pressure parameters Aand B.

Hint A & B are Pore pressure

parameters.

7) A sample of dry coarse sand is tested in the laboratory triaxial apparatus in

the undrained condition. Under a cell pressure of 200kN/m2 , the sample
failed when the deviator stress reached 438kN/m2 . (i) Determine the shcar
parameters of the soil. (it At what deviator stress will the soil fail if the cell
pressure be 300kN/m2

8) If a soil sample has a dry unit weight of 19.5 KN/m3 , moisture content of
8% and a specific gravity of solids particles is 2.67. Calculate the following:
a) The void ratio. b) Moisture and saturated unit weight. c) The mass of
water to be added to cubic meter of soil to reach 80% saturation. d) The
volume of solids particles when the mass of water is 25 grams for
saturation.

9) Earth is required to be excavated from borrow pits for building an

embankment as shown in the figure [Link] moisture unit weight of the
borrow pits is18 kN/m3 and its water content is 8%. Estimate the quantity
of earth required to be excavated for 350 m3. The dry unit weight required
for the embankment is 15 kN/m3 with a moisture content of 10%. Assume
the specific gravity of solids as 2.67.
