Chapter 1: Introduction

1.1 Project Brief

Project Name: Enriching the commercial value of handloom: Handloom Board Complex

Type: Upliftment of handloom products of Bangladesh

Client: Bangladesh Handloom Board (BHB)

Location: Mirpur , Dhaka

Area: 3 acres

1.2 Project Background

The role of the handloom weaving industry in Bangladesh's national economy is

immense. About 100 million meters of textile is produced annually by hand operated,
which accounts for about 5 percent of domestic demand. The value added tax from this
industry is about Tk 1.5 crore . Bangladesh's handloom industry is the largest cottage
industry in the country. There are currently more than one million handmade weavers in
the country, according to the census issued by Government. The weaving industry
contributes about 5% of the country's total textile demand and about 100,000 people are
directly involved in the industry. Only Manipuris started exporting them to the UK at Tk
22 lakh in 20 years and the amount was Tk 1 lakh in 20 years. About half a million
Manipuri fabrics have been exported to the UK in 2012.

From time to time, there have been many changes in the style of clothing. Not just for
the sake of argument, but for the sake of thinking or thinking, "civilization" and "clothing"
are both separate things. But in the civilization of Bangladesh, both of these issues are
in the same formula. In our country, civilization can not be imagined without clothing.
And the weavers of Bangladesh have been working with garments. The reality is that
despite our heritage, agriculture and culture, despite the numerous problems, skilled
craftsmen of different districts of the country have been making different kinds of
weaving fabrics in their lineage. Salute, these artists of the handloom weaving industry.
And weavers and weavers work with 'weaving industries'.
Weaving is our agriculture, our heritage. And it is a matter of pride to be with one's own
tradition.

1.3 Project Rationale

Historically handloom has got its predominance and heritages in Bangladesh. The
tradition of weaving cloth by hand constitutes one of the richest aspects of Bangladesh
culture and heritage. The level of artistry and intricacy achieved in handloom fabrics are
unparallel and unique. The handloom can meet every need from exquisite fabrics of
daily use. The industry has displayed innate resilience to withstand and adopt itself to
the changing demand of modern times.

Bangladesh Handloom Board (BHB) was established in 1977 as a Statutory Public

Sector Organization under the administrative control of the Ministry of Textiles and Jute.
The Board has been entrusted with the responsibility for overall development of the
handloom sector of the country.

After independence of Bangladesh, the artisans who were in Dhaka started to live in the
refugee camps of Mirpur and made their living from weaving saris. Gradually their small
handloom industry began to expand and so did the production. Sari making in Mirpur
gradually grew into big industry from what was initially cottage industry. Towards the
late nineties, a big market also grew up alongside the sari-making units in Mirpur. This
is now known as the Benarasi Palli.

Bangladesh Handloom Board has its head quarter in Dhaka. But there is not any
individual owned building for the main handloom board in dhaka. At present the board
works in a rented floor of a building. For the upliftment of handloom product and better
working environment, there needs to establish a handloom board , research space ,
marketplace for handloom product and a fashion design institute for betterment of
handloom weaving pattern. Keeping these facts in mind, a list of probable programs is
given below:
