THESIS TOPIC: Interpretation center
cum Heritage museum, Mehrauli, Delhi
Interpretation centre, a concept which
is popular abroad, serves as a one-stop
source for tourist sites. Diverse means of
communication, including audio-video
programmes are used to enhance the understanding and knowledge about the
heritage and cultural value of a particular place or historical structure.
The MAP is a significant historic site spread over 200 acres. It is a cluster of 70
monuments, which were built between 12th Century and 19th Century. Prominent
structures located at the site are tombs of Ghiyasuddin Balban, Jamali Kamali, Quli
Khan and Adham Khan. Other attractions are Rajon ki Baoli, Jamali kamali mosque
and Metcalfe’s folly.
The interpretation center at Mehrauli would offer its detailed history through texts,
archival images, drawings, exhibits and artifacts among other things.“The idea is to
provide adequate information about the history of the place.” Information should
be beyond visitors’ imagination and expectation. The proposed interpretation
centre-cum-museum will be the second facility of its kind in the National Capital.
The plan will also enhance aesthetic experience in and around the complex.
STAKEHOLDERS: Stakeholders of the project are Delhi Development Authority (DDA)
and South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) on board as plan needs a holistic
approach.
JURISDICTION AND GOVERNING BODY: Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural
Heritage (INTACH).
BROAD REQUIREMENTS: Exhibition Hall, Conference Hall, Display Area, Cafeteria,
etc.
CRITERIA FOR CITY AND SITE SELECTION
Delhi, officially the National Capital
Territory of Delhi (NCT), is a city and
a union territory of India containing
New Delhi, the capital of India. The
capital caters a large amount of
footfall nationally as well
internationally.
It is also on the verge of becoming a world heritage city as it is ensuring many
projects for conservation and preservation of heritage sites.
WHY MEHRAULI?
- A proposed project by State Archaelogy Department in Mehrauli to build an
Interpretation center cum heritage museum and a cafeteria to attract tourists.
- The museum will be build in the close proximity to a major tourist attraction i.e.
Qutub Complex.
- Mehrauli Archaelogical Park is a significant historic site spread over 200 acres. It is
a cluster of 70 monuments which were
built between 12th century and 19th
century and which needs to be
preserved, some of them are yet not
known and identified.
- The site is connected to a metro station
which is the nearest and an easy transit hub for tourists and visitors.
- Mehrauli is the oldest settlement in delhi city, hence needs to be known by people
and get developed with proposition of such interpretation center and heritage
museums.
- Revenue generation and economic developement of people of Mehrauli could
also be seen under such developement.
SITE LOCATION: Anuvrat marg, Front of Qutub Minar Park, Mehrauli, Delhi
LANDMARK: The site is surrounded by various landmarks in 1km vicinity. This factor
would promote outside visitors to the site, hence would respond to the
marketing and promoting zones of the project.
Major landmarks are Mehrauli archaeological park, Qutub minar metro station,
Mittal garden, Garden of five senses, etc.
ROAD CONNECTIVITY TO THE SITE:
- The site can be approached through 22 m wide Mehrauli- Gurgaaon road also
which is making a T-junction with 100 feet wide SSN road.
- Mehrauli gurgaon road emergng through main highway i.e. Mehrauli-Badarpur
road which is 27 m wide.
- Local roads like Samadia road is 6m wide.
LANDUSE PLAN (EXISTING AND PROPOSED):
- The site is located in the proposed recreational area as per the master plan of
2021.
- The site is located near the qutub minar metro station.
TOPOGRAPHY:
- The site is located in the plain areas with low density of residents.
- The vegetation around the area is abundant, hence will remain comparatively
cooler.
CLIMATIC CONDITIONS:
- Temperature: 25*C - 45*C (Summer)
22*C - 5*C (Winter)
- Precipitation: 800 mm/Year
- Wind direction: North-west to South-east
BUILDING REGULATIONS:
Low Density Residential Area
i. Minimum Plot Area 0.4 cubic ha.
ii. Max. FAR = 2 (without any charges)
- FAR above 2 upto 3(with additional charges to be notified by the competent
authority)
- for plots more than 1 acre, the portions remaining (if any) after plot-subdivision
will get the
benefit of FAR only on prorata basis.
iii. Max. Height =12 meter
iv. Min width of continuous road in front = 6 meter*
v. Min. green area = 50%
vi. Parking = 2 ECS per 100 sq.m
