Solvent Cement For Joining PVC Pipe - Adhesives Formulation 28-3-2019

This document provides a formulation for a solvent cement used for joining polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipes. The formulation contains 25 parts polyvinyl chloride resin, 9.4 parts cyclohexanone solvent, 65.6 parts methyl ethyl ketone solvent, and 2 parts fumed silica. The solvent cement is a low viscosity liquid that is applied to PVC substrates which are then bonded as the solvent diffuses and evaporates from the joint. Fixturing of parts is generally required while the solvent cement sets to prevent movement and weakening of the bond.

Adhesives Formula on

Applicable Type Solvent borne Adhesives

Applicable Base Polymer Polyvinyl Chlorides (PVC)
Applicable Industrial Sectors Automo ve,Buildings & construc ons

Applicable Base Polymer Proper es

Polyvinyl chloride is added to the solvent system to provide body to the adhesive and a compa ble bondline with
the substrates. The bonding process is mainly through the diffusion of the solvent into the substrates and the
added PVC polymer acts mainly to increase viscosity to hold it in the glue area and to provide a degree of
flexibility to the final bonded joint.

Processing
The above formula on is manufactured by first blending the solvents together, adding the PVC resin and mixing
un l it is well dispersed and then adding the remaining ingredients while mixing. The solvent cement is generally
applied to the substrate with a syringe or brush. In some cases the surface may be immersed in the solvent. The
applica on method will depend on the solvent, plas c part, and produc on condi ons necessary. With whatever
applica on method is used, the solvent applica on must be carefully controlled since a small difference in the
amount of solvent applied to a substrate greatly affects joint strength.

Resul ng Proper es
The above formula on is a low viscosity liquid that is applied to the substrates and then the substrates are
brought together and held under moderate pressure un l the solvent in the adhesive has had me to diffuse into
the substrate and evaporate. PVC can be bonded with solvent solu ons containing ketones. Methyl ethyl ketone
is commonly used as a solvent cement for low and medium molecular weight PVC copolymers. High molecular
weight copolymers require cyclohexane or tetrahydrofurane as solvent cements. The solvent cement described
above works sa sfactorily to bond flexible PVC to itself.

Tips and Tricks

Fixturing of the parts to be bonded is generally required to make the parts immovable during the bonding
processes. Movement of parts, such as what can occur when parts are held together by hand, may occur during
the cri cal solvent cement’s se ng period and cause weakening of the joint. Fixturing can be simplified by
incorpora on of loca ng features into the part design.
