On January 20, 2020, at approximately 1030 hours, Orange County Sheriff's Office dispatched
received a 911 call in reference to a murder. According to the 911 caller one of his co-workers, later
identified as Mason Trever Toney, stabbed and killed their boss, William Steven Knight. When

American flag thrown on the side of his body. The flag did not belong to anyone on the job site, to
include the victim. The victim was pronounced deceased on scene by OCFD Captain Chris Newson
at 1056 hours.
I, Detective Fabian Ramirez, was notified of the murder and responded to the scene as the lead

and The following is a synopsis of the interviews:
Mason Trevor Toney and, William Steven Knight are friends outside of work. According to the
witnesses William Steven Knight picked up the suspect Mason Trever Toney for work as usual.
While traveling from one job site to another, an argument began possibly over being antigovernment.
According to witnesses, the victim is a proud and out spoken American and is pro Donald Trump.
They stated the suspect is anti-government and very out spoken about his beliefs that the government
is bad and out to get him.
When they got to the jobsite at the Turnpike Southbound at the 254 exit to SR528, everyone was
beginning to work when they heard William Steven Knight start yelling for help. The witnesses ran
over to the excavator where the suspect and the victim had been talking saw Mason Trevor Toney
stabbing the victim William Steven Knight. William Steven Knight was lying on the ground and
Mason Trever Toney was standing over him and repeatedly stabbing him with a trowel.
The witnesses said they tried to stop the suspect and started throwing things at him when he began
to advance on them with what they thought was a knife. The suspect then jumped into a white Dodge
Ram belonging to Lane construction and took off. As he was driving away, he yelled at the witnesses
and called them terrorists. The American flag that was lying next to the victim was a brand new flag
and the packaging the flag came in was lying next to the victim as well. Witnesses stated the suspected
brought a white and red VANS backpack with him to work, which was unusual because he never
brings any bags with him. The witnesses stated he shouldn’t have needed tools for the job because all
tools needed for work are provided to them at the job sight.
