To Document or Not to Document

That is the Question!

DOCUMENT
Use parenthetical documentation for the following:
quotations=Use quotation marks.
summaries
paraphrases
little known facts
others' opinions
others' research including
polls
surveys
studies
statistics
answers to interview questions

DON’T DOCUMENT
Don’t use parenthetical documentation for the following:
common knowledge Common knowledge is information that appears in many sources--
that is, it's "common" to the sources. Common knowledge is NOT something everyone
knows--it's something people who are expert in a field of study know.
well-known facts like Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492
your own
ideas
observations
conclusions

MLA Quick Reference Guide

Throughout your paper, you will be asked to document citations alongside in-text citations from your research.
Below are some important terms to know as a key for the information on citation and referencing:

In-Text Citation: Including citations of researched work within your paper. This usually comes between your own
thoughts on your chosen topic.
Quotation Marks:
(“ “) These surround the in-text citation, and end before the page number and punctuation. If
you are quoting dialogue, make sure you use quotations within quotations. Ex:
Page or Line Numbers:
(Page Numbers) are always inserted within parenthesis after the quotation and can range in
multiple pages if the citation takes over more than one page from your reference material. If you are quoting
poetry or Shakespeare, make sure you cite (Act, line, scene) numbers instead. Do not insert a “p” before the
number—because this is MLA, we already know you are referring to a page number.
End Punctuation:
The end punctuation always comes after the parenthetical page numbers with in-text citation.
EX: Mr. Brimanson exclaims, “When we end our in-text quotation, it will be followed by parenthesis
with page numbers, and then by the end punctuation” (145)!

Works Cited: Works Cited is the documenting of your research material at the end of your paper. This does not have to
be its own page, and will not count as a page in your total number if separate. You can simply skip two spaces and
include it at the end of your paper following the last paragraph. It needs to include the following items:
Author:
Last Name, First Name. (ALWAYS). Sometimes you will have multiple authors.
Title:
The title of the work needs to be in italics. Please include an edition or subtitle if it is important
to the book or source. A different edition than the one listed may mean we cannot find your
information on the pages you listed.
Publisher:
This is the company that has published the book or article that you are using in your research. Sometimes you
will find that the publisher is a subsidiary of a larger company.
Publishing Place:
You need to only include the city and state of publishing, not the specific number address or zip
Code. If multiple cities are listed, only give the first one.
Publishing Date:
There may be several dates listed…always use the most recent.
Works Cited Formulas
Look at this page as a “works cited formula” reference guide. Simply plug in the information for the citation that
fits your resource. Below are the most popular, but if you are looking for something more rare or specific,
consult the handouts we provided earlier or utilize our MLA Guide. Notice how I indent your formulas, just as
you should indent your citations if they extend beyond one line.
