Bullying and School Violence Analysis

Antonio plans to investigate the relationship between bullying and violence in schools for his SBA project. He will collect information from poems, videos, news articles, and songs, analyzing main ideas, purposes, and language devices. Antonio hopes to better understand how bullying relates to violence and improve his own use of language devices in speaking and writing. In his reflection, Antonio had initial mixed feelings about bullying, believing it caused suicide and violence. After reviewing sources, he found his thoughts were accurate - a news report and song showed bullying leading to offensive behaviors and retaliation. Statistics also confirmed bullied students are more empathetic. Antonio now better understands the relationship between bullying and school violence. In a second reflection, Antonio analyzes

Plan of Investigation

The theme for my group’s SBA is “Bullying”. I selected the topic “The Relationship

Between Bullying and Violence in schools” because as a teenage boy, I am aware that bullying is

prominent in schools, so I can’t help but wonder how bulling relates to violence in school. I

believe that investigating this issue put an end to my wondering so I can help put a stop to

bullying. I plan to read and listen to poems, watch videos on YouTube and other social Medias,

read newspaper articles and listen to songs to collect appropriate information by identifying and

contrasting the main ideas, the purpose for writing and the language devices used in information

collected, I plan to formalize the information present and discuss the findings. I will explore my

development as a student of English and a group leader or member. I hope to find out how

bullying relates to violence in schools while I grow a better understanding of a language devices

used. I hope to be able to use these devices more appropriately in speaking and writing

Reflection #1

Before I started this project I had mixed feelings about bullying. I believed that bullying

caused the victims to take their own lives or someone else’s life. I felt depressed whenever I read

articles and blogs and watch videos or listens songs about school shootings and students

committing suicide because they were victims of bullying. I thought bullies bullied people

because they reflect who they are. I also thought that victims of bullying are children that can’t

stand up for themselves.

After reading and reviewing my sources, I had no difficulty in understanding my

research. The news report in Tobago helped me to understand that bullying cause offensive

behaviours. That piece helped me to understand more about my thoughts and that my thoughts

are accurate. In the “Hidden Rage” (Anti-bullying) by Prodigal Son, the singer said that he has to

show them who is boss and he also said he was sitting in the jail cell and he did not really mean

it. This piece helps me to understand that he was being bullied and he stood up for himself

because no one was listening to him so he shot his school mates. This piece didn’t alter any of

my thoughts. Instead it confirmed that they were accurate. The article confirmed that students

who get bullied are the ones with more empathy and less aggressive personality. This piece of

evidence changed my thought slightly because I didn’t know what I stated earlier. All pieces of

evidence helped me to know more about the relationship between bullying and violence in

schools.

Language is tool used to express one’s self verbally. In the three pieces of evidence that I

have chosen for my SBA the writer, reporter and artist used language effectively to express

themselves. In first instance, the new reporter’s use of evidence was illustrated by using a video

of the incident, which strengthens her view on bullying also the acting superintendent of Tobago

also relied on evidence to substance what was said. Evidently the writer of the article use of

statistics to educate the reader about columbine school shootings and what caused it the writer

also used register which was shown in the article because of how it is written in chronological

order.

Finally in “Hidden Rage (Anti-bullying)” Prodigal Son uses repetition to highlight the

main ideas in the song. He uses irony to appeal to the emotions of listeners where he expresses

that he wanted to turn back time to a certain time to a certain time of his life.
