Lesson Plan

Date: 9/4/19 Subject: Writing Lesson Name: Subject &

Predicate (part 2)

E-Essential How do we recognize subjects and predicates in a

sentence?
Question(s)
Ask students to define subject and predicate. After agreeing
A-Activating on the answer, or helping them, write the sentence, “Yesterday,
Strategy Tyler went to the library with his class.” Have 2 students
volunteer to circle the subject and underline the predicate.
Model: Write “The cat” and “The librarian” on the board under
T- Teaching Methods
each other. Then talk about potential predicates that could
finish one of the sentences. “The cat jumped onto the counter.”
Guided: Have students help to create a predicate that will go
with “The librarian” subject. Write it on the board.
Independent: Have predicates tapped around the room. Pass
out the strips of paper that have the matching subjects.
Distribute them evenly. Have students walk around the room
and find their matches. The students then need to record their
sentences on the provided recording sheet. Have students
read them aloud to check for accuracy.

Have students pick one of their sentences and write it on a

S-Summarizing piece of computer paper. The students should then underline
Strategy the subject, and highlight the predicate. They can create an
illustration to go with their sentence. Collect to check and
display.
