Human Resource Management (HRM):
The deign of formal systems in an organization to ensure effective and efficient use of talent to
accomplish organizational goals.
Human Resource Management is also a premeditated approach to manage people and the work
culture. An efficient human resource management enables the workforce of an organization to
contribute efficiently and effectively towards the overall achievement of a company’s goals and
objectives.
Functions Of Human Resource Management (HRM):
There are four functions of HRM:
1. Staffing
2. Training and development
3. Motivation
4. Maintenance
Staffing:
The activities in HRM concerned with seeking and hiring qualified employees are called staffing.
It has 3 main components:
Strategic Human Resource Planning
Recruitment
Selection
Strategic Human Resource Planning: The process by which organization ensures that it
has right number of people who are capable of effectively and efficiently completing those task
that in direct support of company’s mission and strategic goals.
Recruitment: This is the most challenging task for any HR manager. A lot of attention and
resources are required to draw, employ and hold the prospective employees. A lot of elements go
into this function of recruitment, like developing a job description, publishing the job posting,
sourcing the prospective candidates, interviewing, salary negotiations and making the job offer.
Selection: The process by which an organization chooses from the list of applicants the
person(s) who meets the selection criteria for the positon available considering current
environmental conditions.
Training And Development:
Training is a systematic process of altering the behavior of employees in the direction that will
achieve organizational goals. Development means learning that goes beyond today’s job and has
a longer-term focus.
It has 5 main components:
Orientation
Employee training
Employee development
Organization development
Career Development
This Fresher training is mainly done to make the employees up to date in their respective areas as
required by the company. This function makes the employees understand the process and makes
it easy for them to get on their jobs with much ease. During the process of the training and
development, the results are monitored and measured to find out if the employees require any
new skills in addition to what he/she has.
Motivation:
An inner force that impels individuals to behave in a variety of ways.
It has 4 main components:
Job design
Performance management
Compensation management
Employee Benefit
Employees work in the organization for the satisfaction of their needs. In many of the cases, it is
found that they do not contribute towards the organizational goals as much as they can. This
happens because employees are not adequately motivated. The human resource manager helps
the various departmental managers to design a system of financial and non-financial rewards to
motivate the employees.
Maintenance:
Activities in HRM concerned with maintaining employees commitment and loyalty to the
organization. It has 3 main components:
Health and Safety
Communication
Labor/Employee relation
Health and Safety: Designing and implementing programs to ensure employee health and
safety.
Communication: Designing and implementing employee communication.
Labor/Employee relation: Serving as an intermediary between the organization and its
unions. Designing discipline and grievance handling systems.
